Samantha Lewthwaite: will speculation on the White Widow kill an innocent woman?
MORE no-news on Samantha Lewthwaite – the woman dubbed “The White Widow” by British journalists versed in Agatha Christie and melodrama. Was the British-born Muslim convert who married a man who committed murderous suicide on 7/7 involved in the Nairobi shopping centre massacre? There is no evidence that she was.
And the notion that a woman could lead a band of al-Qaeda style nutjobs on a murderous mission seems out of kilter with Islamist group Al-Shabaab’s views of women as wombs with brooms and mutilated genitals.
Yet, The British media ploughs on with the theory that the white women led the massacre.
The Sun says one survivor saw a “pale-skinned” woman in the gang. The woman, named as Caroline, says:
“She was high up, but close enough that I saw her looking along the floor where I was until she saw me. She aimed at me and opened fire. The bullets did not hit me. I don’t know how that happened.”
The Mirror says Lewthwaite is not merely a mass killer but the “mastermind” .
Back home, a neighbour of the White Widow’s father, Andy Lewthwaite, in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, says:
“For him to imagine his own daughter is involved in this is very painful.”
Whereas for the Sun and Mirror to imagine it is speculation. And this idle chatter is not without consequences. Samantha Lewthwaite’s grandmother, Elizabeth Allen, 85, is unwell. Her neighbour says:
“Her health is poor and continuing to fail as a result of the pressure and all the news reports about her granddaughter.”
Speculation is affecting the health of the White Widow’s innocent grandmother.
Such are the facts…
