MV Akademik Shokalskiyv Laugh In: Trapped Climate Scientists Discover Helicopters Are Faster Than Global Warming

THE ANTARCTIC is home to the coldest place on Earth. On August 10, 2010, satellites recorded the temperature at minus 93.2C (-135.8F), in East Antarctic Plateau at an altitude of about 3,900m (12,800ft).  The coldest temperature on the ground was recorded in July 1983 at minus 89.2 C (-128.6F) by the Vostok Research Station, Antarctica.

So. God speed Russian scientific ship MV Akademik Shokalskiyv (Academik Stuck-a-lotski), which embarked on a mission to record low ice levels and ended up trapped in the ice with 74 people on board. The ship became wedged into the frozen wastes around 1,500 nautical miles south of Hobart.

Would global warming free them before the oil-driven high-powered ice-breakers got there? Two ships, one Chinese, the other Australian, never made it. The ice was just too thick. But we can report that the jaunt led by British-born boffin Chris Turney of the University of New South Wales is now over.

After nine-days trapped at sea, the climate change activists were rescued by a helicopter. The Chinese chopper took them to a safer area of ice, where they boarded the Australian Government’s ice breaker, Aurora Australis.

Joanne Sim, a paying passenger from Sydney, wept, telling the Sydney Morning Herald, “It really has been an emotional rollercoaster”.

Said Turney:  “We’ve made it to the Aurora Australis – a huge thanks to the Chinese.”

You might laugh. John Hayward does:

You’d need a heart of stone not to laugh at the spectacle of global warming fanatics trapped in the ice on their way to Antarctica, where they planned to make a big deal about the relative shortage of ice. It’s even funnier because the highly sympathetic mainstream media so clearly understands how utterly embarrassing this is.

But what about that global warming? The SMH, whose reporter was on the stranded ship, has more:

Temperatures are on course to rise at least 4 degrees by the end of the century, according to research that finds earlier climate models projecting smaller increases are likely to be wrong. The research, by a team led by the University of NSW, says a 4-degree rise in temperature would be potentially catastrophic for agriculture in warm regions of the world, including Australia.

If you can’t trust them to foretell disaster, who can you trust?

And what says Prof. Chris? He accompanies the photo below with the message:

Rain and warm all day but has broken up the ice a bit.

Looks toasty…
