Nick Cannon Kicks Up ‘Whiteface’ Argument

by | 25th, March 2014

WHEN anyone switches up the colour of their skin, an argument ensues. Over the years, there have been hundreds of white actors doing ‘Blackface’ and until relatively recently, the Black & White Minstrel Show was something broadcasters would put on national television, never once thinking that it would offend actual black people.

Since then, everything got confusing for people. In Fonejacker, Kayvan Novak – who isn’t white – indulged in, well, ‘Everythingface’, adopting rubber masks to pull his pranks. Of course, it doesn’t matter what colour you are, you can still be racist, but no-one could agree whether or not Novak’s show was acceptable. Most didn’t even think about it.

After that, ‘White Chicks’ got a cinematic release, featuring two black male actors done up to be white women. Where do you even start with that? For the most part, the response was ‘what a terrible, terrible film’, so everything paled into insignificance. Pun intended.

Now, we’ve got Mariah Carey’s husband (who herself, is a whole essay on skin colour, ‘whitened’ by record companies for years) Nick Cannon, has appeared doing ‘Whiteface’.

“It’s official … I’m White!!!” wrote America’s Got Talent host Nick Cannon, complete with white makeup. He added: #WHITEPEOPLEPARTYMUSIC #Wppm in stores April 1st!!!!!!Dude Go Get It!!!Join The Party!!!! #GoodCredit #DogKissing #BeerPong #FarmersMarkets #FistPumping #CreamCheeseEating #RacialDraft ‘Bro I got drafted!!’

Seems he’s got something coming out called White People Party Music.

People commenting on the picture have accused Cannon of being “racist,” “racialist,” “ignorant” and “hypocritical.” Others meanwhile think the whole thing is rather funny.

Nick even posted a couple of videos on his Instagram account, where he revealed his Caucasian alter ego as “Connor Smallnut.”

“Damn I didn’t know it was going to be this hard being White! … I’m exhausted with all this “privilege” LOL #WhitePeopleProblems,” he later added.

Cannon then shared and pointed at a picture of Robert Downey Jr’s ‘Blackface’ character from the movie Tropic Thunder. He wrote with the photo, “Shout out to @RobertDowneyJr This is one of my favorite characters of all time! Hilarious!!! There is a big difference between Humor and Hatred.”

Where to even begin?
