Manchester United Balls: Class Of ’92 And Qatari Oil Cash Buys Salford City?
COMPARE and contrast these stories on Manchester United’s ‘Class of ’92’. The Sun produced this scoop on March 27, 2014:
DAVID Beckham and his “Class of ’92” Manchester United teammates are poised to front a multi-billion pound takeover of the club. Becks and fellow Red Devils heroes Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, brothers Gary and Phil Neville and Nicky Butt are being pushed as frontmen for a massive deal bankrolled by Arab oil money.
The mega-bucks bid was being bankrolled by Qatar’s mega-rich ruling family. And:
Horseracing trainer Ged Mason, bookmaker Fred Done and several millionaire City figures are said to be among those contacted about the buyout.
Got that? The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) which in 2010 paid £1.5bn for Harrod’s and through a QIA subsidiary Qatari Diar paid £557m for the Olympic Village needs other investors to buy United. Yeah, really.
The story was out there. And others tapped in.
The Mail.
The Mirror.
The Indy
And then Sky News reported:
Manchester United greats Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt have agreed a deal to buy Salford City Football Club, subject to Football Association and Football League approval. The acquisition of the Evo-Stik League Division One North club is due to be completed later in the summer.
Manchester United and Salford City. Easy to confuse the two.
