The Hideous Story Of The Liverpool Man Eaten By His Neighbours’ Status Dog
SOME stories are so terrible they need repeating.
Clifford Clarke, 79, was cooking a meal in his Liverpool home. He opened the back door to let in some fresh air. Outside was a dog. Charlie was not his. The Presa Canario cross-breed had escaped from the garden of his neighbours Hayley Sulley, 30, and 29-year-old Della Woods. Charlie was one of the couple’s three dogs. All big dogs. All status dogs.
They had left the dog outside in the sun. They had not fed it. It had no water. It had no shade.
The dog went for Mr Clarke. It savaged him. One of his arms was left hanging on by a thread. The dog was eating him.
Mr Clarke died from many injuries and loss of blood.
The dog was shot. Twice. After the first shot it carried on.
At Liverpool Crown Court as Judge Mark Brown told them women:
“The dog responsible for this horrific incident was dangerous and out of control. You both caused the dog unnecessary suffering by failing to adequately supervise him and provide him with sufficient food. All three dogs did not have an appropriate environment in which to live. Neighbours have described the dogs barking all the time… I am satisfied that this dreadful and fatal attack on Mr Clarke was entirely avoidable. Mr Clarke was literally eaten alive by Charlie when large parts of tissue were ingested by the dog. That was a very shocking, appalling and tragic event.”
The women have been jailed for 12 months each banned from keeping dogs for life.
