England Balls: No, Roy Hodgson Never Did Call Newcastle United’s Jack Colback The Ginger Pirlo
ROY Hodgson has called up Jack Colback of Newcastle United into his England squad.
The Daily Express tells its readers that Hodgson called Colback The Ginger Pirlo, named in honour of Italy’s Andrea Pirlo.
Only, Hodgson never did call Colback the Ginger Pirlo. What he said was:
“I spoke to someone who knows him well and he called him the ‘Ginger Pirlo’ and it would be nice if he turned out like that. I was impressed with him last year and he has an awful lot to offer. He is a very talented player. Jack plays in a position where vacancies can quickly arise and we will see how he gets on.”
John Dillon then tells readers:
…it wasn’t Hodgson who originated it – it has been circulating in the North-east for some time.
Yes, John. That’s why Hodgson said it was nickname he’d heard from someone else who knows him well. And, no, Hodgson, never did call Colback The Ginger Pirlo…
