THE Sun says Chelsea are looking to sign 17-year-old Romanian Cristian Manea for £2.3million. He’s a good player who will surely go on to have a professional career at some level.

Of course, the transfer season doesn’t open until Janaury, so Chelsea will have to wait a while before recruiting yet another player to farm out on loan.

As the Sun notes, Manea is “expected to go straight out on loan in the New Year to either Vitesse Arnhem or Malaga”.

Where he will play in the hope of being good enough for the Blues first team. And Chelsea will hope that he works every bit as well as the 26 other players they’ve put out on loan.

Cynics will say that Chelsea buy these players to stop other teams getting them. But really it’s just a new income stream: if Manea plays well at this part-time club, they might buy him for a lot more than Cheslea paid.

But it’s all bit tatty. Are these 26, soon to be 27, Chelsea players really part of the Stamford Bridge way? And what does it mean for competition when one mega-rich English club can affect results in a foreign league?

Chelsea look more like an employment agency than a football club, recruiting budding young talent keen to have a big name on their CVs…
