Transfer Balls: Manchester United Linked To Gerard Pique Who Is Happy To ‘Fail’ At Barcelona
TRANSFER Balls: The Daily Express (natch.) has news that “MANCHESTER UNITED are lining up a sensational return for Barcelona and Spain star Gerard Pique”.
United buying a decent defender is a sensation. But what are the facts about Pique?
Anthony Chapman writes:
Despite turning out for the La Liga outfit 269 times, winning four league title, two Copa del Reys and two Champions Leagues in the process, Pique has failed to make an impression under new boss Luis Enrique.
Failed to make an impression? Because in May, the Mirror reported:
Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu says the Blaugrana are holding onto “the best centre-back in the world and a core part of the new project here”
The Mail quoted Pique:
‘FC Barcelona have to be at the top, winning titles and feeling important among the elite of European and world football,’ the 27-year-old said. ‘We have a team, and a coach. We have all the ingredients to get back where we belong… Knowing that I could live out my career here is a big boost for me… I am very excited. In his [Enrique’s] press conference he showed that he’s very clear about his ideas. He knows this place well and I think he’ll do a lot of good for us. I am really looking forward to working under him.’
The Express now adds:
The powerful centre-back is struggling to break the new partnership of Javier Mascherano and Jeremy Mathieu, and his position in Vicente del Bosque’s Spain squad is under threat due to his lack of game time at the Nou Camp.
Would that be the same Piqué who in the five matches Barcelona have played this season, has started twice – once against Villareal in the league and once more against Apoel Nicossia in the Champions’ League?
Such are the facts…
