Indian Footballer Dies During On-Field Celebration
CELEBRATING a goal in a professional football match should be one of the happiest times in an athlete’s career, but tragically, this wasn’t the case for Peter Biaksangzuala.
At just 23 years old, Biaksangzuala scored for Bethlehem Vengthlang FC in the Mizoram Premier League (MPL) in the North East of India. As he turned away to celebrate, he landed awkwardly after somersaulting.
The young man underwent surgery to repair damage to his spine, but sadly, passed away on Sunday.
“This is indeed very shocking for all of us,” Lalnghinglova Hmar, the Mizoram Football Association’s (MFA) secretary, told Goal.
The club confirmed that they will retire Biaksangzuala’s number 21 jersey as a mark of respect, and said in a statement: “It has been a sad day for Mizoram football and the demise of the footballer shook his team-mates, footballers and fans all over Mizoram.”
Bethlehem Vengthlang coach Danny Lalduhawma added: “Peter was a lad with a good manner who always maintained his discipline on and off the pitch. I don’t think there are many like him.”
There’s a video of the incident, which you can see below, but obviously, take care when watching it because you know how despairingly awful the clip ends.
