Snooker Champion Jimmy White Was Hooked On Crack And The ‘Devil’s Dandruff’
JIMMY ‘Whirlwind’ White, the greatest snooker player never to be world champion. was once hooked on crack cocaine.
White has a book out. In Second Wind he says he binged on crack after he lost the world champiopnship final to Steve Davis 1984.
Says the six-time world final runner-up:
“If using cocaine is the Devil’s Dandruff, then smoking crack is worse. Much worse.”
He recalls an episode:
WE had to score some crack. We got our hands on some from somewhere. I might even have had it flown in, I can’t remember.
Kirk Stevens was a big cocaine taker on the snooker circuit. The pair of us were holed up in The Keadeen Hotel in County Kildare.
Kirk said: “Go down to the bar and get everybody’s cigarette lighters would you?” So I did.
Some must have guessed I was an addict by then, because I looked awful.
I ran back, emptied my pockets and spilled these lighters all over his bed.
He had rocks on him so he started trying to cook them.
I started trying to dismantle the door of the wardrobe so we could use it as firewood.
We started breaking down the furniture in the room — a table here, a wardrobe there — trying to get a fire started so we could cook this stuff up.
That’s how sadistic the drug is — that’s how crazy it had sent us.
Odd that a man who spent so many hours with his head down over a table should unwind with his head down over a table…
