Liverpool Balls: How Pressure Made Rodgers Beat Chelsea
LIVERPOOL have been beaten by high-flying Chelsea 1-2 in the Premier League. Matt Law says Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will never manage Chelsea. Well, that much should be obvious: back-to-back home league defeats against his former club have hardly made Rodgers look like Mourinho’s successor.
But, you say, Rodgers did change Daniel Sturridge fom a Chelsea make-weight into a force. Well, even that is open to debate:
Comfortably the most successful transfer of Rodgers’ time at Liverpool has been the £12million signing of striker Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea in January 2013. Sturridge has scored an incredible 36 goals in 52 appearances at Anfield, making his fee a bargain – particularly compared to the £50m Chelsea paid Liverpool for Fernando Torres.
But there are figures in and around Chelsea who believe Rodgers has received too much credit for the signing of Sturridge.
It may be a case of sour grapes, but critics argue Rodgers would not sanction a permanent deal for Sturridge in the summer of 2012 and had to be pushed to complete the transfer in the January transfer window.
Wherever the truth lies, the success of Sturridge has been an embarrassment for Chelsea and a major victory over his old club for Rodgers.
And pretty much the only victory he’s enjoyed over them…
