The Metro Creates The List That Ends All Lists: It Is That Bad
MODERN journalism is much about lists. You make a list and it is news. Things kicked off in 1977, when millions of people (my father mong them) The Book of Lists, compiled by David Wallechinsky, his father Irving Wallace and sister Amy Wallace.
It was a cracking book, a top toilet read. It was a valuable resource when I wrote the quiz questions for the TV show Jeopardy (What is the impossible job?).
This leads us to today’s Metro, in which Caroline Westbrook writes “Five awesome songs you might not realise were originally by Neil Diamond”.
Diamond, one of the most prolific song writers and entertainers of the past five decades, wrote the hits:
Girl You’ll Be A Woman Soon (1967)
Red Red Wine (1968)
and…er…
At this point the list maker is utterly stuck. She reports that Diamond wrote the hit songs Sweet Caroline (1969), Song Sung Blue (1972) and America (1980). You know, his three biggest hits.
List making has jumped the shark*.
