Liverpool balls: Flirting with relgation

by | 12th, December 2014

Robbie Savage is sticking up for Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers in the Daily Mirror:

Kop boss knows it’s not been good enough this season but Reds were closer to the Championship than the Champions League just three years ago

Three years ago – season 2011-2012 – Liverpool finished 8th. But, true enough, Liverpool were 17 points off a Champions’ League spot and 16 points of the relgation zone.

Savage adds that people commenting on Rodgers’ failures are lacking because:

…people who have previously managed or played for the Kop club have jumped on the bandwagon when a little perspective would have been more helpful.

He then adds some perspective, maybe:

I’m not going to sugar-coat the Reds’ campaign in Europe – they have not been good enough, five points (and only five goals) in six matches tells its own story – but in the real world, most people expected Real Madrid to top the group and Ludogorets (a team who did not even exist 15 years ago) to collect the wooden spoon, so they were always in a straight fight for second with Basel.

Well, no.

Liverpool scored one more point than Ludogorets, who by Savage’s own words, have no history.  Yet, the no-marks drew 2-2 with Liverpool; and lost to Liverpool at Anfield thanks to a stoppage time penalty.

…Also, let’s remember where Liverpool were as recently as 2011. They were flirting with relegation when Kenny Dalglish took over from Roy Hodgson.

That was January 8 2011. You can’t be relgated in January. And Liverpool wer never in what Sky Sports calls ‘the drop zone’. Liverpool were in 12th, 11 points off a Champions’ League place…

Such are the facts…
