Arsenal balls: Flamini and Carzorla futures in jeopardy (and other Daily Mail clickbait)

Football fans love those player ratings that feature in newspapers. At home they compile league tables. It’s a little known fact that clubs ask a random sample of 101 fans for their end-of-season results. The data dictates clubs’ tranfer policies.

Today in the Daily Mail, Neil Ashton delivers his verdict on Manchester City v Arsenal. Let’s look at the Arsenal players’ scores.

Ospina: 7
Bellerin: 7
Mertesacker: 7.5
Koscielny:  7
Monreal: 7
Ramsey: 7
Coquelin: 7.5
Cazorla:  7
Oxlade-Chamberlain: 6
Giroud: 8
Sanchez: 6.

So much for the XI starters. What of the subs?

Tomas Rosicky: 7
Kieran Gibbs: 6
Mathieu Flamini: 7

Flamini came on in the 85th minute. He scored the same points as Santi Cazorla, who scored a goal and created another.

Elsewhere in the Mail, two stories:

* Santi Cazorla inspired Arsenal to put Manchester City to the sword… while wearing his dancing shoes!

* Santi Cazorla put in one of the best individual performances so far this season against Manchester City… his and Arsenal’s strong mentality saw Gunners win at Etihad

Modern journalism: you can have it every way in every newspaper, so long as you get hits. As Ashton later writes:

Santi Cazorla was NOT man of the match as Arsenal beat Manchester City (despite the Twitter backlash)… and here’s why Olivier Giroud was actually top dog

The Twitter backslash is what modern football reproting in the Mail is all about…
