Reader photocopies his Kindle to make a more expensive physical backup
Artist Jesse England’s “E-Book Backup” project sees him photocopy his Kindle version of George Orwell’s 1984. He photocopied every page, one by one. He then uploaded the scanned copy to his Kindle.
It’s a specious project. It just makes you wonder why he didn’t just buy a copy of the book or visit the library and borrow one?
England explains his reasons. He cites a 2009 incident when Amazon removed downloaded copies of 1984 from user Kindles over a copyright row.
Digital copyright law is nuts: you can own a book and pass it on to friends to read but if you downloaded a digital version your sharing can be curtailed on pain of law.
Meanwhile, you can read 1984 for free here. No Kindle required.
