Transfer Balls: Chelsea’s Diego Costa orders one more alcopop before returning to Atletico Madrid

Transfer Balls: The Sun reports that Diego Costa is ‘bidding’ for a ‘Chelsea exit’.

The story runs:

DIEGO COSTA has told friends he wants to QUIT Chelsea this summer and return to Spain.

Which friends we are not told.

Sources close to Costa, 26, have confirmed Chelsea’s £32million top scorer is homesick and prepared to take a massive pay cut to rejoin former club Atletico Madrid.

Which sources we’re are not told.

The Spain international told pals that while he is happy at Stamford Bridge, he is struggling to adapt to life in London and pines for a return to the Spanish capital.

Which pals we’re not told.

We’re looking for a single fact in the Sun’s scoop. And we get one, eventually:

But reports in Spanish paper Marca claim Costa is unhappy with the weather and struggling to learn English.

Over to Marca, then, to read D.G. Medina’s report:

Diego Costa wants to come back to Atlético. He has not settled in London and does not rule out taking a drop in salary… The problem is that he has not settled in London – the wet English climate, the language, the food.

Costa lives in London, the most cosmopolitan city in Europe. You can buy pretty much any food there. And at £175,000-a-week, Costa does not have to use supermarket coupons. Good on Costa for trying to adapt to his new environment by eating exclusively full English breakfasts washed down by alcopops, but a more typical Chelsea diet consists of chorizo and humus. The weather Costa can do little about, unless Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich can be persuaded to restart his weather machine. And for a man who speaks Spanish and Portuguese, language issues in West London should not be a problem, and he can simply point the East European polyglot towards his vacuum cleaner.

It’s almost as if Medina is relying on tired cliches to make a point. But as Old Mr Anorak opines, he is Spanish so very possibly lazy and just obeying orders.

Marca’s Medina then adds:

All these are key factors in Costa having contacted the Atlético de Madrid board – with whom he enjoys an excellent relationship – with a view to coming home, to the club he joined at the age of 17 and where he was a big star by the age of 25.

Not a single quote features in Marca’s scoop.

But Costa has gone on the record, saying:

* “Somehow I managed to adapt to English football very quickly. It’s a new League, a new life, I’m loving it.”

* “I think there’s a great atmosphere in the dressing room. No rivalry… Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas are great players. It is very easy to play with guys with such a talent. We understand each other very well.”

Such are the facts…
