The Importance Of Being Open

‘ANORAK is a big fan of Tracey Emin, artist, self-publicist and pride of all Margate.

”Wilde thing, you make my heart sing…”

We particularly liked her recent piece, a raincoat constructed entirely out of used condoms and provocatively entitled ”Here’s Johnny!”

And so we greet the news in the Times that Britain’s film censors have banned under-18s from seeing her new film about sex, suicide and the pain of growing up with dismay.

But at least the youth of Britain have something to look forward to – when they reach maturity, they will be able to rush to the cinema where we don’t doubt Top Spot will still be playing to packed houses.

Sadly, the same cannot be said of Oscar Wilde: The Musical.

The Indy reports that former Radio 1 DJ Mike Read has achieved something of a coup with the shortest running West End musical in recent memory.

Indeed, it’s hard to believe it’s not the shortest running West End musical in history after it closed its doors after just one night and many scathing reviews.

The Telegraph said it was ”hard to feel anything other than incredulous contempt” and the Guardian said ”you begin to wonder whether the sound system is being affected by the hefty rumbling of Oscar Wilde turning in his grave”.

We at Anorak, however, loved it – the haunting aria, The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name, and the rousing finale, Bugger Me, Boys, Bugger Me…’
