Lines On Wimbledon By Serena Williams And Maria Sharapova
FOR as long as Old Mr Anorak can recall Wimbledon meant just one thing: frilly knickers.
Cliff Richard had tried to move the summer event away from knickers toward boating jackets, but his work was undone by Ms Kylie Minogue seeing off the rain in a selection of knickers, culminating in her popping out of the men’s trophy dressed in a gold pair of apple catchers.
Says Maria Sharapova in the Mail:
“I’ve never worn shorts at a Grand Slam. I’m going to be debuting that. Call it menswear, obviously. It’s kind of like a tuxedo look, very simple lines, classic.”
The return of the tuxedo to mainstream spotting endeavour is something Anorak has championed for some time, and we should all look forward to the occasion when the England football team turn out in the outfit of gentlemen, albeit with ready-tied dickie bows (let’s not get ahead of ourselves – it’s not snooker).
Says Serena Williams, again in the Mail:
“I love coats. I probably have more coats then anybody. I don’t know why – I live in Florida.”
Observes the Telegraph:
“When she walked on court the audacity of the coat was audibly appreciated, and at the end she responded to the applause with a wave that could only be described as regal.”
Gasp!
