A New ContactPoint For Paedos and Vigilantes

by | 12th, December 2008

PEADO! It’s the tabloids’ rallying call. Gather round. Form a mob. Bay and bang on the van. Bring the kids.

News is that convicted paedophile Andrew Cunningham has been stabbed to death by a mob who also tried to “hack off his genitals”.

Says a police source in the Sun, beneath the front-page screamer “MOB KILL PAEDO”: “His death was ferocious.” Adding: “He was loathed by a large number of people so we have a lot of potential suspects.”

Cunningham is reported to have served four months prison time for raping a schoolgirl, aged under 13 at the time. Four months for the rape of a minor. Can this be right?

The Sun has more. It says he was arrested in 2003, but for what readers are not told, only that “charges were not pressed”.

“Soon afterwards vigilantes set fire to his former home in a Wandsworth street after discovering he was brazenly grooming kids.”

Again no evidence is offered. But the Sun cannot hear for the din of blood pumping in its ears:

“He fled and set up in the caravan. But drinkers accused him of fondling a barmaid’s two-year-old daughter.”

Mention of Cunningham’s vile crime (he was 52 when he died) and the accusations suggest that the Sun is constructing a defence dossier for the man’s killers.

This is dangerous reporting.

Next month, the Government will switch on ContactPoint, a computer programme that holds information on 11million children in England and Wales.

It’s slogan is “Every child matters – Change for children.” Things are so bad that the Government needs to tell us that children matter.

“…organisations involved with providing services to children – from hospitals and schools, to police and voluntary groups – will be teaming up in new ways, sharing information and working together, to protect children and young people from harm and help them achieve what they want in life.”

This, say supporters, will ensure there is not a repeat of Baby P or Victoria Climbie. Agencies can share information. Estimations are that between 330,000 and 480,000 people of sound mind and body will have access to date on all the little kiddies.

The diagram (see above) puts the child at the centre of the integrated onion, wrapped inside blanket upon blanket of State. No way out. No escape.

Feeling safer?

Of course, data is less important than what you do with it.

What odds the Government will lose it?

What price that it will fall into the wrong hands, perhaps those of paedos looking for targets, or people who have taken it upon themselves to be the saviours of justice and set about tracing a child deemed to be at risk to its entirely innocent mum or dad and showing them how much a caring parent cares with a firebomb?

How will the Sun react when the vigilantes really get going?
