Baron-Cohen’s Bruno Fools Amercian Idol’s Paula Abdul
AMERICAN Idol’s in-house cheerleader Paula Abdul says she was fooled by Sacha Baron Cohen’s Bruno character.
Abdul recalls how she was told she had won an award in Germany and was interviewed by Bruno.
What award she does not say, but rumours are of her being in the running for such gongs as Making Simon Cowell Look Good Award, Services To Hand-Clapping and Most Encouraging Use Of Sequins.
Says she:
“At 2 in the morning, I woke up in a sweat and I went: ‘Oh my God’ And I’m dying, because you don’t expect it.”
The scene:
“I’m greeted by this futuristic dude with a mohawk – and he’s flaming. I walk in and there was no furniture except a chair. And this guy Bruno introduces himself. He snaps his fingers and says, ‘Gardeners’.
“And these two Mexican guys come in, and they drop down to all fours. I see him paying them like 10 bucks.”
Baron Cohen then kicks one of the Mexicans, like you would a snotty pig, say.
Abdul reacted:
“I said, ‘Get me out of here. This is crazy. This is not funny, this is discrimination. This is abusive stuff going on here’.”
Might this be Abdul getting her evidence in before the film is edited? Will her outburst be included in the final scenes? It would seem that now it has to be, or at least leaked on YouTube.
But above all the message is that the trick with Baron Cohen is to play along. Does anyone catch on that they are being lampooned? They do if they don’t want to be in a hit film.
People like a bad sport less than they like a smart arse, and Abdul is neither.
When confronted with Baron Cohen, the jobbing celeb should play along, play dumb and then play it again and again and again on radio and TV shows…
