Barack Obama Needs A Good War To Save Himself

by | 16th, August 2010

BARACK Obama is less popular with Americans than he was. This was bound to happen, you think. Well, no.  This poll from Gallup (click to make bigger) explains what can go right and wrong for the US President. It might be that to save himself or be saved, Obama needs a war. Having forgotten his British allies and talked up the BP disaster, Obama now foolishly gets involved in the debate over the building of a mosque near Ground Zero, New York.  He’s at an Iftar dinner in celebration of Ramadan.

Says Obama:

“As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country.

“That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances.”

Agreed. These are strong words. Obama champions the ideals that help make the US a great country. Obama has made a decisive statement.

Some, however see this as an endorsement of the mosque. The Guardian tells us:

Barack Obama has come under attack from American conservatives for supporting plans to build a mosque two blocks from the site of one of the terror attacks of 11 September 2001.

And then Obama sees a new audience and says:

I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque there. I was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding.”

Oh dear. He has now spoken twice on the ‘local’ matter. An what of those right-wing nutjobs hating Obama for supporting the mosque. Well, the Guardians’ Richard Adams says:

Barack Obama’s cack-handed intervention in the New York mosque controversy may end up doing more harm than good

Left and right – all can agree that Obama is out of his depth.

On a better note, the poll shows that the US is not a racist society – they really do consider their President on merit, regardless of his colour…
