Target The Afghanistan Hero Dog Dies In Mysterious Circumstances

by | 17th, November 2010

RIP Target the dog, you endured and survived Afghanistan but found the Pinal County’s Animal Control division a tougher nut to crack. They killed you.

Target was brought to Arizona from Afghanistan by Sgt. Terry Young. Target has saved Terry life, scaring a suicide bomber as he tried to blow himself and others to smithereens at Dand Patan, a US Army base. The bomber blinked and blew himself up in a doorway rather than the soldier’s mess. No soldier was killed, although five were injured.

Target has escaped from the garden. She ended up in Camp X-Dog in Casa Grande. She was euthanized. Says Young:

“I just can’t believe that something like this would happen to such a good dog.”

So, the hero dog gets offed and the news media reacts. But the story is a bit odd. First the dog wandered off or escaped. Then get this:

On Friday night, Young found Target’s picture on a website used by Pinal County’s dog catchers to help owners track lost pets. It was about 6 p.m. and Young figured the shelter was closed for that night and for the weekend.

So. He never called the shelter to check on his beloved pet? He never checked the times of opening?

He was half right. The shelter’s hours on Saturday are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Still, Young rested easy. “She’s in the pound. At least she’s safe,” he said.

He never called. On Monday, Young visited the pound and learnt that Target was dead.
