Rome Boils To Fill The Vacuum At Italy’s Head
SILVIO Berlusconi clings on to power. The Italian Prime minister survived two votes of confidence. He does this because there is no viable alternative to him. The opposition is neither good enough nor strong enough to make its case. And Rome erupts.
Gianni Alemanno, the city’s mayor responded to the protests that turned nasty. He stands amid the grey splendour of Piazza del Popolo and says:
“Today Rome has been offended by unprecedented scenes of violence. This gratuitous violence took place in the historic centre of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is scandalous and no social or political motivation can excuse it.”
It’s not gratuitous. Violence is becoming the only way to be heard when the top is hollow. Mr Alemanno professes to know his history – he should realise what can happen next…
