Images Of Empire: The National Archives Opens It’s Collection Online
IMAGES of Empire: The Curators at the National Archives in Kew want you to look at the photos of Africa and help identify what they are of. The collection is called Africa Through A Lens.
The photos were taken at the apogee of the British Empire, housed in the Colonial Office library, which shut in 2005. Earl Granville, was secretary of state for the colonies in the 1860s. He wanted all governors to create a record “noteworthy buildings and scenery … together with individuals peculiar to the colony“.
The original captions are not to everyone’s tastes, but they are a historical artefact, a taste of the time.
