Madeleine McCann: Kate McCann And The ‘Truth’ For Sale
MADELEINE McCann: Our Maddie is back on the cover of the Daily Express.
The front page declares:
Why the McCanns believe their daughter is still alive. To coincide with Madeleine’s 8th birthday and the 4th anniversary of her kidnap a new book by mum Kate will reveal all.
Kidnap? That is now a statement of fact, although no conclusive proof has been offered that the innocent child was kidnapped. Still, “mum Kate” will “reveal all”. But surely she has already told the police all she knows and anything more is mere padding.
Inside and:
KATE MCCANN: I WANT TO GIVE AN ACCOUNT OF THE TRUTH ON MADELEINE
Padraic Flanagan reports:
THE true story of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance is set to be revealed in an explosive new book billed as the publishing sensation of the year.
The Daily Express has had its issues with fact and fiction in the case of Our Maddie, having libeled the McCanns and Robert Murat. The true story will be much appreciated. We will get to know the truth. What happened to the child. Who took her – the Express says it was a kidnap.
Four years on, Kate McCann’s emotional first-person account of her daughter’s abduction from a Portuguese holiday apartment will give a huge boost to the depleted fund to find her.
So. The truth is we, like the book’s narrator Kate McCann, do not know where the child is.
What about the facts?
The family doctor and her cardiologist husband Gerry…
Yep. And let us now forget that she is blonde and they are both white. Go on:
…have pledged to use every penny of the proceeds from the book, called simply Madeleine, to continue their desperate search for her.
Why buy the book? Why not just donate the cash to the fund?
The 384-page personal account – which will cost £20 – will be published on May 12 to coincide with Madeleine’s eighth birthday, underlining the book’s central message that her parents are convinced she is still alive.
That truth is looking more subjective – and expensive – by the moment.
Sources close to the McCanns say their belief that Madeleine McCann will eventually be found has been strengthened by the cases of American schoolgirl Jaycee Lee Dugard and Austrian Natascha Kampusch, abducted as children only to emerge alive years later.
Sure. But this is not the “truth”. This is packaged opinion.
After signing the multi-million-pound publishing deal, Kate said: “My reason for writing is simple – to give an account of the truth.”
So. Nothing to do with the “multi-million publishing deal”? This is about “the truth”. But hasn’t it always been about “the truth”?
“Publishing this book has been a very difficult decision and is one that we have taken after much deliberation and with a very heavy heart.”
A heavy heart to give an account of the truth?
“However, in the last few months, with the depletion of Madeleine’s Fund, it is a decision that has virtually been taken out of our hands. Every penny we raise through its sales will be spent on our search for Madeleine. Nothing is more important to us than finding our little girl.”
Fair enough. You do what you can do raise awareness and money. But we are still just watching the parents.
Says Gerry McCann:
“Our hope is that it may prompt those who have relevant information – knowingly or not – to come forward and share it with our team. Somebody holds that key piece of the jigsaw.”
For sure. If she was kidnapped, then it is likely a person did it.
And unless they and anyone they worked with are all dead, then the somebody might react to the book. But it is more likely that the book will cover old news and offer no new light on what has happened to the missing child. We will get to see Kate McCann – but the media have been watching her for years…
