Devon Shopkeeper Tells Hooded Thief: ‘Either Use The knife Or Piss Off’
WE join the action as the hooded thugs enters The News Shop in Fisher Street, Paignton, Devon. Owner, Brian Hammond, 68, is there. The thugs pulls a a six-inch “butcher-style” knife. He wants the money from the till.
Mr Hammond replies:
“Use the knife or piss off.”
The thief choses option 2.
Hammond tells us:
“I came out of the store room and he was standing there with the knife. He demanded money from the till. I thought he was joking until he came around behind me and I knew he was serious. I picked up a screwdriver, which was on the counter and told him ‘either use your knife or piss off’. To my surprise, he did.”
We now know: screwdriver beats knife. Had a another man been there with a baseball bat, we could have seen the birth of a new game, a modernised version of rock, paper, scissors…
