UC Davis Police Department And Linda Katehi Prove Attack Is The Best Form Of Defence: Live Ammo At Riverside
THE UC Davis Police Department has been squirting pepper spray at students protesting at University of California, Davis, near Sacramento. Linda Katehi, the university chancellor, invited police to deal with her customers. They dealt with the protest designed to show solidarity with students at Univeristy of California, in Berkeley, who were hit with batons by police on 9 November, by spraying them with mace.
The police are going through their utility belts with gusto. By the time the students at University of California’s Riverside campus come out in sympathy for their mates at Davis and Berkeley the police will have moved on to live rounds.
Meanwhile Katehi is upset and amazed that armed police should resort to violence. Who knew? Well, anyone poor and black in California knew. But who else? Why did no-one tell her? Says she:
“The use of pepper spray as shown on the video is chilling to us all and raises many questions about how best to handle situations like this.”
Rule 1: Don’t call in the armed police if you don’t approve of their methods. Says Katehi:
“I do not think that I have violated the policies of the institution.I have worked personally very hard to make the campus a safe campus for all.”
Release the hounds!
A look at the UC Davis website informs us:
The UC Davis Police Department is proud to serve the UC Davis community as well as our medical center campus located in Sacramento. We are here to assist and provide security for all who attend, work, and or visit our campuses. We are committed to community oriented policing. We know we can’t do it alone and ask our community, visitors alike, to help us create a safe and secure environment. Please take some time to get to know us a little better.
There is advice on how to survive an “active shooter” – you know, a loon with a weapon he’s firing into the faces and bodies of unarmed students:
The UC Davis Police Department currently hosts workshops presenting to the members of the campus community strategies to increase the likelihood of surviving an active shooter. The presentation will cover the five steps for increasing your chances of surviving an active shooter:
▪ Escape
▪ Cover
▪ Hide
▪ Play dead
▪ Attack the attacker (last resort)
Yep, tip number one: escape. The students didn’t manage to do that. They also were unable to take cover, being in the open and inches from the attackers’ yellow pepper spray. As such, hiding was out. Playing dead remained an option, and one victim did gamely cough up blood for 45 minutes. As for attacking the attacker… Well, the police have that one covered:
Annette Spicuzza, the UC Davis police chief, says students had “encircled the officers”, adding:
“They needed to exit. They were looking to leave but were unable to get out.”
Instead of “escaping” the police opted to “shoot on sight”.
The cops should turn their advice on its head: attack in the best form of defence. Don’t be a victim – go equipped and trust no-one…
