Polar Bear tries to mate with BBC nature presenter (video)

by | 6th, January 2013

IN this video BBC nature watcher Gordon Buchanan dresses as a polar bear and sits in a mobile “bombproof” ice cube to film polar bears. In The Polar Bear Family & Me, a title with shades of Lloyd George knew my father. This is nature telly for voyeurs. David Attenborough’s Voice of God has been replaced by a telly presenter’s attempts to be mated with or eaten.

The YouTube blurb accompanying the video promises much:

This is the terrifying moment a wildlife cameraman comes face-to-face with a fierce 1,000kg polar bear looking for its next meal. The eight-foot predator repeatedly attacks the perspex cage housing Gordon Buchanan as he films a new series. For almost 45-minutes the Scottish filmmaker endures the polar bear’s sustained assault as it desperately looks for a weak spot in his pod. The bear, with its powerful paws and giant teeth, was trying to get hold of the 40-year-old so she could feed herself and her two young cubs.

Says Gordon, a polie mind reader: “…without a doubt she wanted me for lunch.”

More blurb tell us:

Mr Buchanan followed mother Lyra and her cubs Miki and Luca for 12 months to get closer to a polar bear family than anyone has before.

But he could closer to a mum and her kids. In The Polar Bear Family & Me, Gordon ties himself to the polies back and shouts “mush”.

On the Times, some of the comments are great:

Scott Benowitz: “Do bears enjoy eating humans’ hands? Do they believe that this is an aphrodisiac?”

laura claydon: “hardly fair as these poor beautiful creatures are dying from starvation.. he may as well dangled a fresh steak in its face!”
