April Jones: Is Mark Bridger an abattoir worker or a lifeguard?
MARK Bridger was “probably responsible” for the death of five year old April Jones. But he says he didn’t kidnap her. He says he didn’t murder her.
Judge Mr Justice Griffith-Williams said that it can be reported in the press that “you have indicated that the defendant’s case is that he was probably responsible for the death of April”.
On Channel Five News that becomes: “admits he probably killed her“.
No. That’s not what the judge said. Five has taken the one statement of interest from today’s events and twisted it.
In Mold Crown Court, Bridger has plead not guilty to child abduction, murder and perverting the course of justice. His trial begins on February 25.
April Jones was playing on the Bryn-y-Gog estate, Machynlleth, in mid Wales, on October 1 2012. Then she vanished.
Reporting will be tight. So. What can the media do? Well, the papers can mention Mr Bridger’s job:
Times: “A former abattoir worker has admitted he was ‘probably responsible’ for the death of five year old April Jones but denied that he either kidnapped or murdered her.”
Daily Mail: “Former lifeguard Mark Bridger is ‘probably responsible’ for the death of five-year-old April Jones, who went missing in mid Wales last year, a court heard today.”
London Evening Standard: “A former lifeguard admits that he is ‘probably responsible’ for the death of five-year-old April Jones but denies her abduction and murder, a court heard today.”
Daily Mirror: “FORMER lifeguard Mark Bridger today pleaded not guilty to the abduction and murder of five-year-old April Jones, who went missing in mid Wales last year.”
Guardian: “Mark Bridger, a former lifeguard, is accused of abducting April Jones, five, as she played near her home in Machynlleth, mid-Wales.”
What is he – a former abattoir worker or a former lifeguard?
