Every Spurs striker say Tottenham will beat Arsenal – for 17 years they’ve all been wrong
CAN Spurs finish above Arsenal in the Premier League? Tottenham have not finished a season ahead of Arsenal since 1995. Will this season be any different? Former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor now plays for Spurs. He wants to end the hoodoo:
“Last season at the last game of a tough race, you know what happened. We don’t want to commit the same mistake. For me it’s a big chance to show people I was right to leave Arsenal, which means finishing on top of them. If that’s with Tottenham even better.”
We’ve heard it before:
Darren Bent was at Spurs in 2007:
“Spurs are a club that are definitely going forward. There’s no reason why we can’t catch Arsenal, which is what makes this season coming so exciting.”
In 2008, Jermaine Jenas was looking to a rosy-fingered dawn:
“We can definitely overtake Arsenal next year.”
In 2009, Harry Redknapp was the Spurs boss. He could feel the tide shifting:
“Arsène has done a great job there over the years. But we’re getting closer to them, without a doubt.”
Another Spurs striker, this time Robbie Keane, knew it:
“If you look at the last four or five years, Arsenal always got ahead of us slightly, but if you look now, it’s certainly even. “And if you look at the squads, the bench we have is probably a little bit stronger than their bench.”
In 2010, Rafael van der Vaart was the Spurs forward who had a feeling in his water:
“Arsenal have a great team but our squad is not worse than Arsenal’s.”
Spurs striker Peter Crouch had a vision:
“Arsenal are still ahead of us in the Premier League, but we are getting a lot closer — soon we will be above them in the league.”
Van der Vaart again:
“Can Arsenal finish above us? No. No chance. We’re better.”
In 2013, Gareth Bale, now playing as the Spurs forward, saw it as his duty to revisit old ground:
“I think now we have overtaken them on the pitch.”
Arsene Wenger says Arsenal can finish above Spurs in second place.
