Lance Corporal James Ashworth win the Victoria Cross
LANCE Corporal James Ashworth, 23, of the 1st Battalion The Grenadier Guards has won the Victoria Cross. He was killed by a grenade blast in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on June 13 2012.
He becomes only the 10th person to win a VC since World War 2.
Captain Mike Dobbin, Commander, Reconnaissance Platoon, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, said of Ashworth:
“Lance Corporal Ashworth was killed while fighting his way through compounds; leading his fire team from the front, whilst trying to protect his men and he showed extraordinary courage to close on a determined enemy. His professionalism under pressure and ability to remain calm in what was a chaotic situation is testament to his character.”

Above all this very brave man should be remembered, yes for his sacrifice and his bravery and doing absolutely more than I or you would, but more because he will not smell summer days again, he will not be levelled by a lovers look or see real love in the eyes of a son or daughter. This man’s memory is worth more than any debate on the rights and wrongs of things.
