Madeleine McCann: the Costa Teguise angle gets revised
THE 62-year-old arrested as part of an investigation into the alleged abduction of a three-year-old girl at Costa Teguise, Lanzarote, has been released on bail. The Press Association has sent that news to all publishers.
The man has been bailed to return to Milton Keynes police station in early May. He’s not been charged with any offence. He is simply helping police with their enquiries.
The Daily Mail does not name the man. It did give us a name once before, though. But now that Mail’s website has been changed. A man’s name has been removed from the story. No apology has been given for naming an innocent man in what remains an alleged incident.
But the paper does end its report by linking an alleged crime in January 2012 to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in May 2007:
A near six-year search for Madeleine has yet to solve the mystery of her disappearance from the Algarve resort of Praia da Luiz on May 3, 2007.
The Daily Star has given its readers a name before in a story headlined “MADELEINE MCCANN COPS QUIZ KIDNAP BRIT SUSPECT.” That name remins online. The Star had yet to report that the man has been released on police bail.
It is surely bad reporting to make an innocent man’s name public and then fail to deliver the full facts.
