Luis Suarez Transfer balls: Arsenal have history – Liverpool have death threats and deadlines
TRANSFER balls: By now you’ll be wondering what Luis Suarez has been up to. Today’s news round-up follows:
Metro: “Arsene Wenger admits Arsenal are not close to signing Liverpool striker Luis Suarez”
Admits?
We recall Wenger saying on Suarez discussions:
“As you know the transfer period demands secrets and confidentiality, so I can’t answer the question.”
And:
“You want me to announce a spectacular signing, but I can’t. We are working behind the scenes to strengthen the squad – but I can’t give you names.”
So. Not admits; more says what he always says: he’ll let everyone know when a deal’s been done.
The Metro adds:
And after the Reds admitted on Friday that they intend to hang on to the Uruguayan at all costs, Arsenal manager Wenger has admitted he is not closing to doing business.
At all costs? The Daily Express says:
Liverpool insist the Gunners must pay over £50million if they want to sign the Uruguayan striker.
So. There is a cost.
In search of answer for the future, let’s look to the past. On June 25, 2012, ESPN noted that Wenger had denied reports linking the Gunner with Malaga’s Santi Cazorla.
“You see I have come here to say as little as possible! I am ready to talk a lot, but not a lot about transfers, because it is a very fragile subject and a very secret subject.
The report went on to say that Cazorla has a €45 million buy-out clause in his contract. On June 25, Wenger also said:
“We are not close to signing Cazorla.”
On 7 August 2012 Arsenal bought the Spaniard for £16.5m
Wenger is the model of consistency. Expect nothing until the deal’s done. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, on the other head, just talks and talks and talks.
“I know what we are trying to build and grow, so why would you swap Liverpool to go to Arsenal? I am not sure that it adds up, to be honest. Arsenal have a wonderful history in their own right but Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“We are not in the Champions League and haven’t been for a while now, but we have to step up to the challenge.
“It is difficult for Luis, I understand that. If a team wants you, it can be difficult.
“I am sure Luis will have seen the sheer size and status of the club here, so we’ll just see how it goes. But it is not something we want to run on for too long.”
Having asked and answered his own question, Rodgers may cock an ear to the Daily Star, which claims:
ANGRY Liverpool fans are threatening to kill striker Luis Suarez if he lands a move to Premier League rivals Arsenal…
Joshua Whateley tweeted: “If by any chance Liverpool do accept a bid, and you move, I will find you and I will kill you.’’
Another fan wrote: “Can Arsenal just f*** off. If Luis Suarez leaves I’ll hunt him down and kill him.’’
The Sun says “Arsenal are willing to give Suarez a five-year deal worth £150,000 a week.”
Suarez can get a decent burglar alarm for that kind of cash and move to a place like rural Surrey or Potter’s Bar, where a Scouse accent is eyed with suspicion.
Maybe, Suarez will escape his would-be killers by heading to Madrid? No chance says the Express:
Arsenal given clear run at Luis Suarez after Real Madrid ‘pull out’
So. London it is. And Suarez will have protection:
Renowned photojournalist Julio Etchart, who moved to the British capital from Montevideo in Uruguay 40 years ago, said Suarez had the opportunity to galvanise other expats in London.
He said: “We would love to see him at the Embassy. It’s a very special occasion and he would be very welcome.
But Suarez is staying at Liverpool. Right? Maybe. The Express says Suarez is to be replaced at Liverpool by Udinese’s Luis Muriel. The Business Standard says the new Suarez will be Roberto Soldado.
Such are the facts.
More transfer balls tomorrow.
