Jeremy Paxman issues beard statement to the pognophobic BBC
THERE has been quite the hubbub about Jeremy Paxman and his beard this week, with some people near-orgasmic in praise, while others somersaulting in disgust.
The real news is that, current affairs aren’t as interesting as a TV titan growing a bit of fuzz.
And now, as a result of all this hirsute excitement, Jeremy Paxman has had to come out and issue an official statement about his hairy chin, inevitably sighing about the whole thing before taking it out on a back-bencher.
He said:
“I have grown a beard for the last few summers, and suddenly wondered whether I really needed to shave it off to present Newsnight. Unless you’re lucky enough to be Uncle Albert on Only Fools and Horses, Demis Roussos or Abu Hamza, the BBC is generally as pognophobic as the late-lamented Albanian dictator, Enver Hoxha. I may keep it or I may shave it off, but I think I’ll make my own decision.”
Hoxha, if you didn’t know, was an Albanian communist leader who banned beards. See? Even with something so trivial, Paxo can still teach us a thing or two about the world. The other news is, of course, that the BBC have got something against people with beards, which could cause rioting in various hipster communities.
If you haven’t seen Paxman’s face-fuzz, you can watch footage of it below. Does it make him look distinguished? Is it better than Alan Hansen’s brief dalliance with a beard?
