Madeleine McCann: we know only know one thing for sure – an innocent child vanished
MADELEINE McCann: the news of the missing child is high on the cycle. One thing has changed which she went missing in 2007. Social media means people can talk more freely than they can in the UK. But Twitter would not make pleasant reading for the child’s parents, Gerry and Kate McCann. The armchair detectives are having a field day. What was once “every parents worst nightmare” has become everyone’s game of Cluedo.
One thing unchanged is that the story has a single fact: the innocent child vanished.
Fleet Street Fox gets it:
Six years ago a little girl disappeared. And that’s it – that’s pretty much all we know for sure.
But speculation, as ever, is rife.
No-one has seen much of it apart from a brief trailer, and no-one at all has heard what the new information might be. That hasn’t stopped an awful lot of people having their say, with everything from off-colour jokes to wild accusations. Not one person who makes them knows what’s actually true. They’re not criminal psychologists, they haven’t sifted the evidence, and most of them can’t begin to imagine what it must be like for your child to just drop off the radar like that…
It says a lot about human beings that the ability to presume the worst of strangers, on the basis of no evidence at all, is as undiminished today as it was when we crawled out of the swamp.
What facts. She has give,. She says it’s hard to bury a body int eh dust and rock of Praia da Luz; the parents could have used the resort’s baby listening service as they dined out 80 yards away from their three young children “THIS DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE MURDERERS. Nor does it constitute criminal neglect as some suggest – it’s a mistake, and one they’ve no doubt thought about quite a lot”; the polive made basic errors; predatory paedophiles are rare; “if they were abusive parents there’d be clear signs to their relatives and friends they were holidaying with. None have been discovered”; and then:
If it wasn’t Kate or Gerry, and if a body hasn’t been discovered, there’s only two options left. Either Madeleine was disposed of as thoroughly as April Jones – to the extent where there’s only a few bone fragments left lying around somewhere – or she’s still alive.
Back when she went missing the Mirror produced its six theories. Then, of course, one of the paper’s journalists cast the sideways eyes at innocent Robert Murat.
Anorak covered the story from day one because it looked like it would run and run, the single thread story being spun by a voracious media.
