The Mirror leads with news that the Spurs winger is on 16,000 a week. Every week. It choses to compare Townsend’s new wage packet not with that of a nurse or teacher but with Manu Adebyaor, the Spurs striker on £170,000-a-week. Darren Lewis writes:
Andros Townsend could yet become a target for rival clubs after Tottenham’s reward for his England heroics was a new four-year deal worth ‘just‘ £16,000 a week.
Have Spurs gone mad?
The contract means that, despite a £10,000 per week pay-rise, the 22-year-old’s earnings will still be dwarfed by misfit team-mate Emmanuel Adebayor’s £170k weekly wage – which is partly paid by his former club, Manchester City.
No. But Manchester City did. Maybe Andros should bat his eyelids at City?
Lewis, having placed ‘just’ in inverted commas, then continues to use the shift key:
The young winger had three-and-a-half years left on his original contract, which paid him ‘only‘ £6,000 every seven days.
‘Only’ seven days in a week. You cannot argue with Lewis’ facts.
Having conjured up a story to show that a 22-year-old who has played less than 20 matches for Spurs and twice for England is being short-changed on £16k a week, Lewis adds:
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy – known for driving a hard bargain – has sparked bemusement by refusing to sanction a bigger, bumper package for the impressive wideman.
Man known for driving a hard bargain causes bemusement by, erm, not paying over the odds for Townsend. Any more facts?
It was believed Levy would reflect the player’s achievements in England’s World Cup wins over Montenegro and Poland with a stunning new package.
Doesn’t it?
Instead, Townsend – who is set to start Sunday’s Premier League game at Aston Villa – could yet find himself a target for rival clubs if he continues the rate of improvement that has left club boss Andre Villas-Boas and England manager Roy Hodgson purring.
