Police set to interview former handy men who worked at Madeleine holiday club
Not witnesses, then. Handymen.
Police probing Madeleine McCann’s disappearance want to interview two odd-job men who worked at the Algarve holiday club where she vanished.

More than 130 employees were quizzed by detectives led by former police chief Goncalo Amaral in the original inquiry . They included the two maintenance workers who fixed a window blind in the McCanns’ holiday apartment two days before the three-year-old went missing. Luis Ferro and Mario Moreira were ordered to flat 5A to mend a broken blind in parents Kate and Gerry McCann’s bedroom around 10am on May 1, 2007.
Good they were interviewed. But why are they witnesses?
Mr Moreira, who had been working at the Ocean Club for 20 years when he was interviewed, said he had not noticed anything strange in the days leading up to Madeleine’s disappearance and was at home at the time. Police involved in the initial probe reported at the time: “Nothing relevant or useful for the ongoing investigation came out of the interviews.
“Nothing was obtained from them that permitted us to follow any new line of investigation.”
So…
And there is no suggestion the two maintenance workers are in any way connected to Madeleine’s disappearance.

Months after the disappearance and after seeing Gerry McCann on TV, Mr Smith told police that he thought the man he saw carrying a girl around Madeleine’s age at the very time she went missing reminded him of Gerry McCann himself.
Mr Smith has reportedly since withdrawn that claim – just as Portuguese police have officially told the McCanns they are no longer suspects for their daughter’s disappearance. The couple have also won libel damages for false suggestions that they were in any way involved.
Numerous witnesses have also given statements making clear that Mr McCann was at his holiday complex at the moment the sighting occurred – which was at the very time when he and his wife started calling for help looking for Maddie.
The Mail then adds:
But shortly after Mr Smith told police Mr McCann may have been the man he had seen carrying a little girl, a friend of the McCanns said: ‘Look at the facts. This man sees an individual carrying a child on the night Maddie vanished. He waits 13 days to report this to the police, going back to Ireland in the meantime. At this stage he admits he has no idea who the man is. Almost four months go by before, after seeing him on TV, he feels that it could be Gerry. The truth is that this is part of the victimisation of Gerry and Kate which has gone on from the very beginning by the Portuguese.’
Why add that?
I HOPE someone can explain why the police are spending £5m of taxpayers’ money on the search for Madeleine McCann.
Officialdom’s search for Madeleine McCann has given rise to all-purpose suspicion.
What changed, what lent the discovery of Maria and the two Irish children its resonance, was not some spurious mob hatred of Roma; rather, it was the state-backed reinvigoration of the search for Madeleine McCann.. That was the catalyst, the spur to action; that was what piqued the national and international media’s interest in blonde children who don’t look like their parents. And that was what made it seem okay to assert that these blonde children who don’t look like their parents might be stolen or abducted. Indeed, in the case of blonde girls, they might even be Madeleine McCann herself. As the McCanns’ spokesperson, Clarence Mitchell put it, ‘these two cases [in Ireland and Greece] have given Kate and Gerry renewed hope for their daughter’. He added: ‘Whenever any child is recovered in circumstances like this it gives Kate and Gerry hope that Madeleine, too, will also be found. It shows that members of the public and the authorities are being vigilant – and with any missing child case public awareness is paramount.’
Such are the facts.
