Spurs Balls: Robbie Savage Is Upset That AVB Is Not Harry Redknapp
AND on it goes, the daily tabloid grind blaming Andre Villas-Boas for not being Harry Redknapp, the great Spurs manger who won NOTHING at Spurs and presided over a spectacular Champions’ League collapse. Today Robbie Savage has to-deadline thoughts he wants to share with his Mirror readers:
Boring, boring Tottenham. There you go – someone needed to say it, so it might as well be me.
Actually, lots of Spurs face have been saying it. Maybe you’re just following them, Robbie?
If Andre Villas-Boas wants to know why his job suddenly came under such heavy scrutiny this week, it wasn’t just about the six-goal hammering Spurs took at Manchester City.
Not it was because…
It’s because Tottenham have gone from English football’s great entertainers under Harry Redknapp to being plain dull to watch.
…he’s not Harry Redknapp.
Ultimately, Villas-Boas will be judged on whether the White Hart Lane club qualify for the Champions League come May. And based on what I’ve seen so far this campaign, they have no chance.
Spurs are two points – TWO – outside the Champions’ League places. They are three points better off than they were last season.
I can’t remember the last time I found Tottenham so humdrum to watch.
Maybe if Savage were a season ticket holder he would recall that Spurs scored 66 Premier League goals last season, the same as the season before that. In 2010-11, Redknapp’s thrillers scored 55 league goals.
It’s certainly a far cry from the flair and fantasy of Bale, Luka Modric and Rafael van der Vaart in Redknapp’s side.
Modric left Spurs at the end of the 2011-2012 season. He joined them for the 2008-2009 season. Van Der Vaart joined in 2010. Bale joined in 2007. All three players were in that 2010-11 team. And – yes, let’s repeat it – they all scored 55 Premier League goals. That season under Redknapp Spurs finished 5th, outside the Champions’ League places. Flair and fantasy, Robbie. Flair and fantasy…
