Convicted Child Molester Allowed To Adopt
IN Sweden a man in his 60s is able to adopt a child. This one man has many – 90 – criminals convictions. He’s been in prison four times, most recently released in April this year. One conviction is for molesting his neighbour’s five-year-old daughter in 2004. In 2007, he was considered a danger to girls. He was given parenting training.
He now wants to adopt his ten-year-old stepson. He’s married to the boy’s mother. They wed in 2009. But she died. Before passing away she gave her consent for him to adopt the boy. The boy has no other relatives. He is disabled. His disability means he has not been questioned by the authorities.
Helsingborgs Dagblad newspaper reported that the local municipality’s ten-member social affairs committee (socialnämnd) has assessed the man and found him a low risk. They burgers voted. Only one said it should not happen.
Chairman of the Social Welfare Board in Helsingborg, Anders Lundström, would not comment on the individual case, but insists that the committee goes through all the cases and investigate them thoroughly before deciding: “I can not answer for how officials handle the cases. Social Services Committee makes thorough assessments in all cases, and decisions are made based on the conditions that exist at the moment.”
“I should have stopped it,” social services head Dinah Åbinger told the TT news agency. “I can only say that it was a weak investigation. There are questions that aren’t described in depth and the investigation should have been resubmitted to family court even before it reached the committee. Because of that I’m reporting us to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (Inspektionen för vård och omsorg, IVO).”
