“IT is a weird story, I must admit, ” says Kevin Walters. “About 21 years ago, my parents were at a Phil Collins concert here in Chicago, and one thing led to another. They ended up at the oasis … and I was conceived there. They were like, ‘Oh yeah, hey, we never really told you how you were born, or your conception,’ and my parents are weird people, so it’s not that surprising.”

Mr Walters is 21. Collins would have been on his No Jacket Required World tour when he appeared at the Rosemont Horizon On June 17 1985. After the show, the people who would become Walters’ mum and dad decamped to the Des Plaines Oasis on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway.

The Tollway Oasis offers “commuters and travelers a variety of convenient food options and a wide range of services… spacious food courts, ample seating featuring panoramic windows, clean restrooms, free Wi-Fi, outdoor picnic tables, a child-friendly environment, fenced areas for pets and auto and truck fueling stations….”

But now the Des Plaines Oasis will be torn down as part of a plan to widen the Addams Tollway. So Kevin has changed himself to the place.

Will the place of his birth become the place of his death? Will Collins tour again? Is conception what the Oasis means by a “child friendly environment”? Can you get the sound of Sussudio out of your head?

More to follow…
