TRANSFER Balls: Arsenal are being linekd with a move for Olympiacos defender Kostas Manolas. Is there any truth in it? After all, in 2013, the Star said Manolas was being watched by Newcastle. That followed the Star’s September 2013 news that “Tottenham, Sunderland and Fulham targeting Greek defender Kostas Manolas”.
The source for the Star’s scoops was Gazzetta.gr, a site that said Manolas was on his way to Juventus in a done deal (August 8) and heading to Roma (March 2012).
Numerb of quotes from anyone connected to thsoe clubs: nil.
Also in 2010, Manolas was an Everton player.
So. What now for the Greek player?
On August 4, the Telegraph reported that Manolas would cost Arsenal £8m.
News was:
Olympiakos strategic advisor, former Real Madrid midfielder Christian Karembeu, said: “We are not willing to negotiate his sale for less than £8m.”
No Arsaenal bid had been forthcoming but Juventus has made an offer.
Manolas has talked to Karembeu about his future and has also attracted interest from Everton, Sunderland and Tottenham.
On August 24, The Shields Gazette added another team to the Petri Dish:
The Gunners are also tracking Olympiakos defender Kostas Manolas, 23, who featured for Greece at this summer’s World Cup and is also interesting Manchester United.
On August 20, Manolas was on the verge of becoming a Gunner. The Express repoted that Arsenal had secured the player for less than that £8 deal breaker:
No. The Irish Indy says that £8m asking price was met.
On the 20th, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger opined:
“Honestly, we are not close to signing anybody”
On the 25th – and following no news on that medical – the Metro thundered:
But this tweeter said the deal had been done:
This news is followed the Star’s scoop that Roma are after the player:
We’re told:
The French boss had earmarked the 23-year-old as his first choice replacement for the departed Thomas Vermaelen.
First choice. But mega-bucks Arsenal cannot do a deal on their main transfer target? And what about that medical?
All smells of the usual balls.
