Transfer Balls: news of Manchester United’s mad £45m bid for Sergio Ramos

by | 21st, June 2015

Transfer Balls: The Daily Mail says Manchester United are “close to signing Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid”. Ramos has a contract keeping him at Real until 2017.  He’s 29. How close are United? Well, the Daily Star says talks between Real and United will begin this week.

Reports the Mail:

Manchester United are close to signing Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos in a dramatic twist to the David de Gea saga. Ramos is upset that Madrid have allowed his contract to run down into its final two years and has told advisers he wants out of the club with Old Trafford his preferred destination.

If United can make the deal happen their goalkeeper De Gea will effectively swap places with his Spain team-mate Ramos, in the biggest piece of business between the two clubs since Real signed Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.

A defender will “effectively swap places” with a goalkeeper?

And if that’s not made enough, the Mail gets to the fee:

Ramos, who signed from Sevilla in 2005, has a €200m buyout clause

Would Manchester United pay that much for Ramos? No:

…but Real are likely to ask for around €65m for a player who has won everything in the game for both club and country.

On what planet is Ramos, 29, worth that much?

The Telegraph has reported at Chelsea want Ramos:

Ramos, 29, is reportedly unhappy at the Bernabéu following the arrival of Rafael Benitez earlier this month and has demanded a contract worth £10m-per-year. Despite being linked with Chelsea, the centre-back is also being monitored by Manchester United and Arsenal who are looking to bolster their sqauds during the summer.

Ramos is so unhappy at Real that only a new contract and more money can make it bearable.

The Express then adds:

SERGIO RAMOS is set to reject offers from Chelsea and Manchester City in favour of a move to Manchester United….

Ramos recently angered Real Madrid by allegedly offering himself to Barcelona as part of a presidential election pledge. Barca presidential candidate Jordi Majo said: “Ramos offered himself to us a while ago as an election secret weapon. I do not know if he was offered to anyone else.”

It looks like Ramos is throwing his weight about, reminding Real of his value to them. In 2014, Ramos said he wanted to end his carer at Madrid: “I hope to be here for many years and retire here.”

Such are the facts.
