How The Press Used And Abused Joanna Yeates
WITH interest we note that at the same time as the Sun is serialising Kate McCann’s book, it is facing contempt of court proceedings over their reports on Chris Jefferies, the man given the Full Murat in the story of Joanna Yeates’s murder.
As the BBC reports:
The High Court has granted the attorney general permission to bring a case against the publishers of the tabloids.
Mr Jefferies is thought to be taking legal action against various news organs that monstered him (the Sun, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, Daily Express and Daily Star) and also taking legal action against the police, who went against the usual protocol of saying the man was “helping us with our enquiries” and named him as a suspect.

Madeleine McCann: Kate And Gerry Seduce Vain David Cameron To The Sun’s Self-Serving Campaign
MADELEINE McCann: Anorak’s at-a-glance look at Our Maddie in the news: Missing for 1,471 days, the innocent child is back in the news:
Daily Mail (front page): “CAN THE YARD FIND MADDIE?”
Hope so.
The Sun (front page): “EXCLUSIVE: CAMERON ORDERS NEW MET POLICE PROBE INTO MADELEINE CASE”
“PM: I’VE REOPENED MADDIE FILES”
David Cameron has taken the bait. “As a dad”, he had no choice. The Sun places their man at the centre of the story. This is personal. This is in the first person.
Theresa May, the Home Secretary, explains all in an open letter to the paper that backed the Tories at the last election:
FOUR years after she went missing, Madeleine McCann is still always in our thoughts. So I welcome The Sun’s role in making sure that her case is not forgotten. None of us can know what Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry, have been going through. We can scarcely imagine the pain they have had to suffer or the pressure they have been under. We all want to see this beautiful little girl returned to her parents. That is why we have been doing everything we can behind the scenes in the search for Madeleine. Although it might not always be in the public eye, the British authorities have never given up on their work to find Madeleine.
Today I am pleased to announce that the Prime Minister and I have agreed with the Metropolitan Police Commissioner that the Met will now be using its particular expertise to review the case. The Met have skills, techniques and know-how which we hope can bring a new perspective to the case.
The Home Office will be providing the necessary financial support. Of course, the Metropolitan Police cannot promise that this work will lead to Madeleine being found. But it is right that we should do everything we can to help. It is my sincere hope that this new police involvement will bring closer the day that Madeleine comes home.
This is politics in the modern era: mawkish, opportunistic, emotive and ultimately self-serving.

Princess Diana Death Photos: What Harm Can They Do?
WANT to see photos of the dying Princess Diana? Of course, if you wanted to, you already have. Chi magazine published them years ago. And Channel 4 published the crash photos in 2007, in piece of tabloid telly called Diana: The Witnesses in the Tunnel.
Said the broadcaster:
“These photographs are an important and accurate eyewitness record of how events unfolded after the crash.”

Madeleine McCann: ‘As A Dad’ David Cameron Has To Find Our Maddie
MADELEINE McCann: Day 5 of the Sun’s serialisation of the Kate McCann book Madeleine. Today the book is overtaken by an appeal to David Cameron.
Sun (front page): “OPEN UP THE MADDIE FILES”
This is this “McCanns’ open letter to Cameron”
Having tried to gain mileage and reader interest in the book – including a delve into Kate and Gerry McCann’s sex life – the Sun leads not with the book but with an appeal:
Dear Prime Minister
As a devoted father and family man, you know the importance of children. Our beloved eldest child, Madeleine, was abducted from Praia da Luz, Portugal, four years ago. Since then, we have devoted all our energies to ensuring her safe return.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange now makes his associates sign a draconian nondisclosure agreement that, among other things, asserts that the organization’s huge trove of leaked material is “solely the property of WikiLeaks,” according to a report Wednesday.

L’Oreal National Movie Awards: Photos Of The PR-Driven ITV Advertorial
ARE the L’Oreal National Movie Awards the most dire and desperate awards in the business? The categories Must See Movie Of The Summer and One to Watch: Brits Going Global show that this is an awards do formed by the PR industry.
You can tell a lot about the calibre of an awards do by seeing if it is on ITV (if it is, it’s most likely crap) and the venue: it’s Wembley Arena, a place blessed with all the soulfulness of Simon Cowell sat on pile of gold licking his eyelids.

Madeleine McCann: Has The Tide Changed Against Kate And Gerry McCann?
MADELEINE McCann: Every now and then as a journalist you spot a tide change; a dramatic turnaround in the nature and character of a familiar story.
Last night those in the know saw a very hard-hitting piece by Chris Freind (who writes the Freindly Fire column/blog) pulled by the Philly Post in as yet unexplained circumstances.
It was a piece re the McCanns and mentioned a link to one of the world’s richest people Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.

Is Barack Obama’s Situation Room George Bush’s Plastic Turkey
ON Saturday 6 December 2003, Mark Lawson told Guardian readers that George Bush was “stuffed by a plastic turkey”.
In a revelation certain to be taught at schools of democracy and journalism for years to come, it has been revealed that the apparently appetising turkey that President Bush carried towards beaming troops last week in Baghdad had been genetically modified to a degree that would lead even the most profit-hungry farmers to protest. The bird was the kind of model used by butchers and Hollywood set-dressers.
Following this disclosure, the president is, unlike his political prop, stuffed…
…the affair of the plastic turkey can only be attributed to insecurity.
…Whatever the details, the message is clear. Though he still lacks anything as pesky as a plausible Democrat opponent, Dubya is starting to fear that his administration may become the second one-term turkey served up by the Bush dynasty.

Madeleine McCann: Casandra Jardine, Chris Freind And Spinning In Circles
MADELEINE McCann: Cassandra Jardine and Chris Freind (whose article has now been removed) debate the rights and wrongs of Kate McCann’s book. Odd that a single thread story – the vanishing of an innocent child – should be debated. But such is the way of a story that has been spun:
First up Jadirne, who asks Telegraph readers:
Kate McCann: why didn’t they believe her?
Who are they?
So far there has been only one public recantation. A tabloid journalist wrote yesterday that he “rues the day” he rubbished the McCanns’ version of the disappearance of their daughter, Madeleine, four years ago.

Madeleine McCann: Extracting The Extracts
THE Sun has extracted so much from Kate McCann’sMadeleine for its massive serialisation it’s a wonder there’s anything left worth reading. However, I do applaud the paper’s championing of the book – I guess they must have parted with more than £500k for the rights, perhaps more given the advertising campaignbehind it.

Will Smith And Jenny Cannybody Lose Super Injunction Fight: Spoilt Rich Bastards Got Theirs First
JENNY Cannybody, 30, of Scotswood Road, Newcastle upon Tyne is never likely to get the superinjunction she craves to stop the exposure of the fact she is having her bones humped to breaking point by Will Smith. (No not that one).
This Will Smith is, as fable has it, a 42-year-old North Shields butcher and, according to Jennifer in a Newcastle’s Bigg Market pub rest room tête-à-têtes with her mates, likes a good time, has a bit of brass and knows how to wield his pork sausage the right way. (“If you know warra mean, like”)

Or it could not. But by the time we get to the teaser, the impending doom has worsened:
Climate change will disrupt wi-fi connections, cause regular power failures and lead railway lines to buckle unless Britain spends billions of pounds, Caroline Spelman, the Environment Secretary has warned.

Brazil’s Big And Bold Dam Project Is No Avatar Plot
THE Belo Monte dam on the Xingu River in Brazil, once complete, will be the world’s third largest hydroelectric dam complex, after China’s Three Gorges Dam and the Brazilian-Paraguayan Itaipu Dam.
The £7.5bn project, first initiated in 1975, is expected to provide electricity to 23 million homes and to create an estimated 41,000 jobs. According to Brazil’s Energy Research Company (EPE), “Belo Monte enables Brazil to meet two goals: to provide electric power to boost economic growth while at the same time avoiding emissions of greenhouse gases”. Indeed, with a booming economy that grew 7.5% last year, Brazil is facing a soaring energy demand.
But the dam project has been marred by controversy from the outset. In recent years, a string of environmentalist groups and celebrities have launched campaigns against Belo Monte, saying it will ruin biodiversity and disrupt the livelihoods of indigenous populations.

World War One In Incredible Photographs: Every One An Epic Story
WE asked the question: how will World War One be remembered? The answer: photographs. Oh, for sure they can lie. They can provide a half, stylized, self-conscious record. But if you see enough photographs, the truth outs.
We’ve compiled a gallery of quite simply outstanding photographs of the Great War. Ordering this big album of photos is an impossible job. We’ve tried but each time we look again, a few image captures our attention and stirs the imagination.

Muslims Against Crusades Kill Prince Harry With Laughter
THE barely literate Muslims Against Crusades (see their video here) says that Prince Harry is a Nazi who will die as an enemy of Islam. The News of The World reports:
EXTREMISTS aiming to avenge the death of Osama bin Laden have made Prince Harry their top target in a chilling video.
This is not nice for Harry. But how powerful are the MAC lads? Well, the paper says they “tried to storm the US Embassy in London on Friday”. The Daily Mail agrees. Yep a few priapic Muslim youth in scarves and banners tried to break into one of the most guarded buildings in London.

Osama Bin Laden’s Dead Body Photos: Want To See?
THE White House’s kak-handed handling of the death of Osama bin Laden makes us wonder if public enemy number one rally is dead. We saw Dillinger. Show us Osama.
Damian Thompson says the approach has been good for conspiracy theorists. But wanting proof does not make you a nutter in a tin hat. Questioning the official version of events – one that keeps changing – does not make you a denier.

Barack Obama’s Spin And Lies Over Osama Bin Laden’s Death Photo
SHOULD the US show us the photo of Osama bin Laden dead with a hole in his face? Do we need the photo to prove the kill of the mass murderer? Are we now so reliant on visual images that we are unable to get the facts without photographic evidence? And if bin Laden is not dead, where is he? And will he now appear to sqaush Obama, who is basking in improved poll ratings?
