The Ghost of Christmas Presents Past: Mr Microphone
THE Ghost of Christmas Presents Past – Number Three: Mr Microphone
LAST month we looked at the K-Tel “Various Artists” compilation albums that took Britain by storm in the Seventies. But that wasn’t the end of the story.
K-Tel was the brainchild of Philip Kives, a salesman from Winnipeg. In the mid-sixties he was flogging new-fangled Teflon pans by demonstrating them on TV. It worked a treat, so he went to Australia, where he used the same method to shift a million knives in five months, making a profit of a million dollars.
This didn’t go down too well with his supplier, Seymour Popeil, who refused to do business with him after that. Kives responded by temporarily shifting his attention to records, releasing 25 Great Country Artists Singing Their Original Hits in Canada. Then he set up K-Tel, which sold both gadgets and records, and pushed both with maximum energy and minimum subtlety.

The Times: “Girl, 12, abducted by ‘internet stalker’ on family holiday in France”

A 12-year-old British girl was found sobbing in a French airport after a Belgian man abducted her from a holiday villa and tried to take her on a flight to Madrid. The girl from Glasgow had been staying with her family in a villa in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer in the South of France when she was lured away by a 41-year-old man she had met on the internet.

The Most Controversial Michael Jackson Pictures
MICHAEL Jackson Watch: HELLO! magazine leads once more with pictures of Michael Jackson. These are “UNSEEN PICTURES”.
It would always take something special to make the lead Jackson narrative something other then the abuse allegations and the mobile face, and thanks to his dying the media has some new threads to tug on and unravel and tie in a knot.
Hello! lists them all on its cover:
“DEBBIE’S CUSTODY FIGHT”
“THE FAMILY FEUDS”
“THE LAST PERFORMANCE”
“THE WILL AND FUNERAL”
All good stuff for the media to sink its teeth into. But can any of these achieve a legacy that will surpass the Jackson controversies to date?
Lest the story move on, Anorak takes a look a nostalgic look Most Controversial Jackson Pictures (so far):

Susan Boyle Launches Range Of Merchandise
SUSAN Boyle Watch: Anorak’s at-a-glance look at Susan Boyle in the news. Susan launches a new range of merchandise, which may say well should she well, retire undefeated…
Susan Boyle is one reality TV contestant who let fame go to her head. And by that, I mean she had a breakdown as a result of the celebrity that was thrust upon her after appearing on “Britain’s Got Talent.” But she’s not alone. Paula Goodspeed committed suicide outside “American Idol” judge Paula Abdul’s home after being teased about her weak tryout. Then there’s CT from “Real World/Road Rules Challenges: The Duel 2,” who would have killed Adam in a couple fights if producers and cast members hadn’t intervened.

Fallen Princesses: When Reality Bites The Fairy Tale
DINA Goldstein’s Fallen Princesses place Fairy Tale characters in modern day scenarios.
As the artist says:
In all of the images the Princess is placed in an environment that articulates her conflict. The ‘…happily ever after’ is replaced with a realistic outcome and addresses current issues... I began to imagine Disney’s perfect Princesses juxtaposed with real issues that were affecting women around me, such as illness, addiction and self-image issues.

How To Make A Russian Jet From Cigarettes
IN Anorak’s masterclass today, readers learn how to make a Russian Jet fighter from a cigarette box.
Old Mr Anorak once dispatched me to Cuba, approaching from Cancun. The plane was Russian. The seat fell backwards and remained supine throughout the flight. The overhead fan when touched lighted collapsed. The onboard staff laughed and then went “Whoooooh” when the plane fell and rose repeatedly.
When we landed, there was three-hour wait in the airport while a crowbar was retrieved to prise open the hold.
Anyhow, enjoy. Pass the smokes:
