Why You’ll Love George Bush When He’s Gone

WHEN George Bush goes, you’ll love him. Stanley Fish agrees:

Now I would like to enter these treacherous waters again and venture another prediction: within a year of the day he leaves office, and no matter who succeeds him, George W. Bush will be a popular public figure, regarded with affection and a little nostalgia even by those who voted against him and thought he was the worst president in our history.

Does anyone really dislike George Bush the person, or just disagree with what he represents? He’s hard not to like…

Meanwhile, does anyone like Tony Blair, the worthy, humble, vain, greedy religion-on-his sleeve, pleasing, warmongering, creepy, grinning hero of the once bereft Left? Maybe when he goes, we will.

Armed Courses: Sending The Troops Into Britain’s Schools

THE Conservatives have unveiled their “Troops For Teachers” scheme. “SEND IN ARMY TO SORT OUT SCHOOLS,” says the Express on its cover.

The Sun says servicemen and women “would be paid to re-train as teachers on leaving the forces in a bid to boost tough inner-city schools.”

Yeah, nothing like a few trained killers in the tuck shop to teach those cocky kebab shop knifers what’s what.

Labour’s Michael Meacher Will Not Speculate On His Speculations

THE overarching reaction to the banking crisis is that so few of our elected representatives have a clue about the money markets.

It’s not just Sarah Palin who is utterly ruderless, but also ambitious Michael Meacher, our Labour MP for Oldham West & Royton. This is what he writes in the Times:

For Labour to have a fighting chance at the next election, radical demands surfaced at Manchester for significant policy change. Not just a crackdown on short-selling, but action against speculators in general.

We must cut down on speculators. Go it? Now read on:

Sarah Palin’s Alaskans For Oil-Enriched Water

SARAH Palin is not a witch. No spin doctors for Palin; just witch doctors.

Now in the Washington Post, Art Hackney, a political consultant and director of Alaskans for Clean Water, speaks out.

Yeah, Art Hackney, a man who sounds like a community collective in East London where members make papier-mâché effigies of Wives of Hizbollah.

David Cameron’s Flawed Debt Story

DAVID Cameron has been quiet on the banking crisis. Want to know why? It’s because he and his party have nothing meaningful to add:

Cameron is then directly quoted, saying: “I think that we have had a failure of regulation and we have had a debt boom that went on for far too long and it reached into parts of the economy it shouldn’t have done. The whole thing has become infected and it has got to be dealt with.”

A propos our previous post, Cameron is playing with fire taking this line. For sure, it is generally agreed that that has indeed been a “failure of regulation”, but by far the bulk of regulation, and the regulatory structures, are of EU origin. They are not within the gift of Cameron to change, without taking on the European Union, which the leader of the opposition shows no sign of doing. But to pretend that they are “Gordon Brown’s” is a very silly strategy indeed.

Isn’t it all the failure of capitalism?

Barack Obama Can See Into The Future

A VIDEO of Barack Obama talkoing about the 2002 speech he made:

Tim Blair notes:

Edited transcript:

The speech that I delivered in 2002 wasn’t just me getting up and yelling, “I’m against the war.”

It was a very clear, specific outline of what I anticipated would happen if we went into war and why we shouldn’t do it. And it stands up pretty well … [it] was based on sound judgment.

Well, at least until the surge. Obama next veers into how his childhood overseas gave him insight into tribalism, before apparently returning to the matter of his speech:

Some of it was probably also my lawyer’s training.

I watched pretty carefully the presentation made by Colin Powell at the United Nations.

As a lawyer, you’re trained to poke holes in somebody’s case … it didn’t look particularly strong to me.

Strange thing, though; Obama’s speech was delivered in October 2002, four months prior to Powell’s UN appearance.

What’s gonna happen in four months from know, Barack?

McCain Chooses Politics Over Poverty

I’m sure that we are all shocked and surprised by the news that John McCain has decided that, after all, the financial crisis gripping the USA should take second place to his Presidential campaign, and that he should instead devote his time to the televised debate with Obama.

Ok, the more cynical people on the planet might feel that it was only too predictable that once McCain had failed to pressure the Democrats into forcing the bailout through Congress, thus allowing him to claim that the Republicans would never have been nice to those nasty bankers, he had nothing more to gain from screwing up the process still further.

Indeed, a decent human being might have been embarrassed at the sight of a Republican Secretary to the Treasury going down on his knees to beg Ms Pelosi to use the Democrat majority to save the country from another Great Depression; McCain clearly didn’t care.

A week ago Hank Paulson was demanding powers beyond Stalin’s wildest dreams; yesterday he was Otis Redding telling his country that he loved it too much to stop now.

And the share and bond holders of WaMu just got caught in the crossfire of McCain and Palin’s desire for power…

Man Drowned In Thai Election Publicity Stunt

HAND our flyers for your candidate by all means. But would you lay down your life for David Cameron?

A publicity stunt by an underdog in the race to be governor of Bangkok went badly wrong when her campaign manager drowned as they bathed in a canal to highlight the plight of residents who have no access to clean water.

Candidate Leena Jangjanya said 32-year-old Thirasak Sitanont drowned on Thursday as she and other staff were showing journalists the rashes they got from washing in the filthy water.

“One of my staff saw him waving and crying for help, but we thought he was pretending and he was far away from us, posing for two TV crews,” a sobbing Leena told Reuters.

“A few minutes later he disappeared and we had to call the police to come and find him,” said Leena, who had fallen into another canal in front of the TV cameras on Wednesday as she was trying to show her support for riverboat commuters.

Gordon Brown’s supporters are facing far slower death…

Sarah Palin Gives Asif Ali Zardari A View Of Mother Russia

SARAH Palin has been meeting with foreign leaders in New York. What does he have to say? Hey, what does it matter?

The new president, Theo Paphides look-alike President Asif Ali Zardari, is ready for a Hart to Hart. He’s a Palin supporter. I’m John McCain, and by the way, her name’s Sarah, and she’s gorgeous:

The text:

Sherry Rehman, Pakistan Information Minister. “And how does one keep looking that good when one is that busy?”

Palin: “Oh, thank you.”

Presdient Asif Ali Zardari, entered the room seconds later. Palin rises to shake his hand, saying she was “honored” to meet him. Zardari calls her “gorgeous”.

Zadari: “Now I know why the whole of America is crazy about you.”

Palin: “You are so nice. Thank you.”

Curtains. Light out. Sound of gun being fired…

Neo Nazi Austrians Champion English

THOSE Germans (Anorak subscribes to the Eurovision school of politiks and includes under the umbrella term ‘German’, Austrians, Swiss and some of Paraguay’s smartest districts).

In the Guardian’s article on a “surge in support for far right” in Austria threatens to make the country a haven of closested neo-Nazia (plus ca change), readers hear from one Karl Friedrich.

Karl is “proud to live in Karl Marx Hof, Vienna’s vast monument to municipal socialism. But not as proud as he used to be.”

Oh?

“We had great times here. There were artists and writers all around. Great parties. They’re all gone now,” says the former communist. “Now half the families in my block are immigrants. They can’t speak German. They can’t even speak English.”

Yeah, they can;t even speak English in Vienna. The swine.

Obama Is A Muslim Sentenced To Death

THE BARACK Obama Death Cult has a Muslim chapter.

I recently came across a more interesting version by Daniel Pipes. His argument is not that Obama is a Muslim but that, from the standpoint of Muslim law, he was a Muslim as a small child, at a point at which he had a Muslim step-father whom he occasionally accompanied to the Mosque. If so then, from the Muslim standpoint, Obama is now an apostate, a Muslim who converted to Christianity.

Under Muslim law, it is permissable to be a Christian (or a Jew or a Sabean–along with Muslims the four “peoples of the book”), but for a Muslim to abandon Islam is a serious, indeed capital, offense. Hence, Pipes argues, Obama might have problems dealing with Muslim leaders.

Muslim leaders like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad?

Kevin Rudd Arrests Ahmadinejad In New York’s Little Zion

MAHMOUD Ahmadinejad is limbering up to address the great and good at New York’s Hyatt Hotel.
Also in New York is Australia’s leader Kevin Rudd.

That might be the same Kevin Rudd who vowed to take “legal action” against Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the International Court of Justice for “inciting genocide”.

As Rudd might recall, Ahmadinejad vowed to wipe Israel off the world’s map, and in so doing kill millions of Jews.

As Piers Ackerman says:

That was then. Prime Minister Rudd is now at the UN where he has every opportunity to ask Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to refer Ahmadinejad’s genocidal calls to the UN Security Council as a matter threatening international peace and security.

Rudd is a man of his word. He’ll pull his finger out and point it at the would-be weisse angel:
