Islamists destroy Tripoli shrine – leave bosomy minarets intact

HOW goes the Arab Spring in Libya? Well, the BBC reports that a Sufi shrine to al-Shaab al-Dahman in Tripoli has been smashed to bits. Salafi Islamists are in the frame.

The Salafists (great name, guys) view the shrine and others like it as idolatrous. A tomb to 15th-Century scholar Abdel Salam al-Asmar in Zlitan has, reportedly, also been targeted.

Norwegian killer Anders Breivik sentenced to 21 Years in prison – photos

IN August 2011, Anders  Breivik murdered 77 people on Utoeya Island,  Norway. A court sentenced Anders Behring Breivik to prison on Friday, denying prosecutors the insanity ruling they hoped would show that his massacre of 77 people was the work of a madman, not part of an anti-Muslim crusade. Reading the ruling, Judge Wenche Elisabeth Arntzen handed down a sentence of “preventive detention” of at least 10 years and a maximum of 21 years:

Read the leaked police documents about the arrest of Julian Assange

WE know how Julian Assange will be arrested. The British police will not press the fire alarm at the Ecuadorean embassy in London nor will they lure the WikiLeaks founder out with scraps of conspiracy theory and girls. Thanks to a Metropolitan Police, we can read the plans.

The paper reads:  “Assange to be arrested in all circumstances … he comes out with diplomatic officials, in diplomatic bag, in diplomatic vehicle.

Was Todd Akin just quoting Irish science on rape?

WAS Todd Akin, science expert, the Missouri-based expert in rape and inventor of the Pussy Portcullis, just quoting from Irish texts when he said “legitimate” rape does not make babies?

Up until Tuesday last, the pro-life website www.prolifeinfo.ie told one and all:

“Trauma from the rape may bring into play some natural defence mechanisms that reduce the likelihood of pregnancy, such as hormonal change and spasms of the Fallopian tubes, which inhibit ovulation or fertilisation. The chance of conception resulting from a single act of unprotected intercourse even between consenting fertile individuals has been estimated at only 2 to 4 per cent.”

Oral sex and unsafe sex are good for your mental health, says Daily Mail

WHEN Eddie Wren told us and Daily Mail readers “Semen is ‘good for women’s health and helps fight depression'”, we grabbed a jug of Fear Factor donkey semen and read more about the healing brain juice:

Oral sex is good for women’s health and makes you feel happier, according to a study which studied the effects of semen’s ‘mood-altering chemicals’.

Not just semen. But swallowing semen as a result of oral sex. Got that? Maybe rapists – for whom the news keeps geting better – an administer the stuff on the national health?

To investigate whether semen has antidepressant effects, the authors rounded up 293 college females from the university’s Albany campus, who agreed to fill out an anonymous questionnaire about various aspects of their sex lives.

Black Kiss 2 is banned in the UK: sales should rocket

YOU won’t read Howard Chaykin’s comic book Black Kiss 2 in the UK. The book is not for children. As Chaykin says:

“It’s all about the three things that matter most: sex, death and the movies. It starts in a nickelodeon and ends in the Internet.”

Black Kiss was was sold in plastic bags by Vortex Press. Casual browsers could not open it in store. Chaykin says Black Kiss 2 is “considerably filthier” than the original. Good for him. Porn sells. 50 Shades of Grey sells.

USA Today reports:

During a recent trip to visit family, he noticed Fifty Shades of Grey was on his daughter-in-law’s night table, and she was embarrassed to admit she was reading the popular book. “She actually put her hand on top of it and looked away, like I wouldn’t notice,” says Chaykin, adding that, even though she never has read comics in her life, his daughter-in-law’s up to date on Black Kiss. “She said, ‘You must be really proud and really ashamed at the same time,’ which I thought was one of the best reviews I’ve ever had.”

Black Kiss 2 is signed for Mature Readers. Is it porn? Rich Johnston writes:

If I catch any of you fiddling with yourself when reading this, then I will be having words. The themes, attitudes and horror of the situation presented should have the opposite effect.

The Church of England V Narconon and the Church of Scientology

HAS your school been visityed by Narconon?

Narconon provides drug information, education about the effects of drugs and effective drug rehabilitation programs for those already in the grip of addiction.

The site Naconon Exposed writes:

Founded in 1966, the modern Narconon programme is the work of the late L. Ron Hubbard, the science fiction author and founder of the Church of Scientology

This site is, likewise, no fan of the outfit. The Sun reports:

SCIENTOLOGISTS have tricked their way into primary schools posing as drugs campaigners, The Sun can reveal. Thousands of pupils have sat through classes inspired by the cult — while parents were kept in the dark. The Sun has discovered anti-drugs group Narconon has even claimed the backing of some of the UK’s biggest High Street names and bagged cash from the Queen’s bank Coutts.
Our probe found that Narconon — which is inspired by the work of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard — been visiting schools in Newham, East London, and Islington, North London, for four years.

Apocaholic: The past 50 years news in two paragraphs

CAN the news of the past 50 years be surmised? Matt Ridley has a go:

Over the five decades since the success of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring in 1962 and the four decades since the success of the Club of Rome’s The Limits to Growth in 1972, prophecies of doom on a colossal scale have become routine. Indeed, we seem to crave ever-more-frightening predictions—we are now, in writer Gary Alexander’s word, apocaholic. The past half century has brought us warnings of population explosions, global famines, plagues, water wars, oil exhaustion, mineral shortages, falling sperm counts, thinning ozone, acidifying rain, nuclear winters, Y2K bugs, mad cow epidemics, killer bees, sex-change fish, cell-phone-induced brain-cancer epidemics, and climate catastrophes.

So far all of these specters have turned out to be exaggerated. True, we have encountered obstacles, public-health emergencies, and even mass tragedies. But the promised Armageddons—the thresholds that cannot be uncrossed, the tipping points that cannot be untipped, the existential threats to Life as We Know It—have consistently failed to materialize. To see the full depth of our apocaholism, and to understand why we keep getting it so wrong, we need to consult the past 50 years of history.

Are you an apocaholic?
