Wind farms create climate change and make it hotter

THIS really is the most glorious story. We’re told that we have to put up bat slicers all over the country in order to beat climate change. When, in fact, the bird choppers themselves create climate change:

Large windfarms can increase local night time temperatures by fanning warmer air onto the ground, new research has revealed. The study used satellite data to show that the building of huge wind farms in west Texas over the last decade has warmed the nights by up to 0.72C.

We should note that this is real science too, published in Nature and all.

The best and worst juxtaposed newspaper headlines ever

THE best / worst juxtaposed images of the day might not be all accidental. Who would want to be the poor sod with the camera on the front page of The Sunshine Cost Daily’s front-page warning over paedophiles?  Is Santa Claus a “child porn kingpin”, as The Times of South Africa seems to be saying? Is the Journal Sentinel having at the late Ted Kennedy? Let’s take a look..? Those infamous Costa Concordia pages are here.

German Gorbuntsov: who is the wanted Russian banker shot in London?

GERMAN Gorbuntsov, 45, was shot six times outside his flat near London’s Canary Wharf on March 20th 2012. The Russian businessman who fled his country in 2009 says he knows who tried to kill him.

Gorbuntsov tells The Mail on Sunday:

“I believe that the assassination attack on me was organised by the same group of people that four years ago was behind a raid on my assets. The main argument, proving their involvement is this: they are the only ones with a serious motive. I simply have no-one else who would want me to be dead.”

Great Barrier Reef not dying, just moving

THE Great Barrier Reef is dying. In 1999, the BBC told us:

The Australian Conservation Foundation says the reef, which stretches 2,000km along the east coast, is “dying a death of a thousand cuts”.

Might climate change expand our eternally-dying reef?

A team of scientists will test whether climate change could push the Great Barrier Reef south.

A team from James Cook University and the University of Sydney will begin a study on Gardner Bank, near Fraser Island, to see whether the area could become an extension of the reef in the future.

Smutty and sexist cartoons from the 1950s

SMUTTY and Sexist Cartoons is a collection of funnies from old magazine published in the 1950s and 1960s. I remember reading my father’s collection of these funny books in the attic. There was always something warmly erotic about them. I’ll get hold of them and start publishing soon…

James Murdoch, Jeremy Hunt and Fernando Torres – what the Sun didn’t tell you

Barack Obama bans medial marijuana selling but supports torture

MEDICAL marijuana needs supporting. But Barack Obama says he can’t ask the Department of Justice to “Ignore completely a federal law that’s on the books”. OK. Some on cannabis prescriptions sell their drugs on illegally. But so do people on prescriptions for all manner of uppers and downers.

Greenwald wonders about Obama’s moral compass:

The same person who directed the DOJ to shield torturers and illegal government eavesdroppers from criminal investigation, and who voted to retroactively immunize the nation’s largest telecom giants when they got caught enabling criminal spying on Americans, and whose DOJ has failed to indict a single Wall Street executive in connection with the 2008 financial crisis or mortgage fraud scandal, suddenly discovers the imperatives of The Rule of Law when it comes to those, in accordance with state law, providing medical marijuana to sick people with a prescription.

Flashback to April 27 – Photos from this day in history

APRIL 27 – On this day in history…

This map drawing of the area in which the United States’ spring H-bomb tests will take place in the Pacific Ocean, shown April 27, 1956. The distance of the islands of Eniwetok and Bikini from Japan, Guam, New Guinea and Hawaii is noted. The islands are in a vast danger zone which has been established. It covers more than 420,000 square miles. Precautions have been taken to avoid any repetition of incidents like the one during the last hydrogen bomb test. A Japanese fishing boat unwittingly came within range of the fallout. Illness and death among the crew, which the Japanese attributed to the effects of the fallout, brought strong reaction. Protests over the new tests have been made both in the United States and aboard. (AP Photo/Ed Gunder)

Egypt moves to legalise necrophilia

IN Egypt laws are afoot to allow a husband to have sex with his dead wife. Necrophillia is getting legalised in the Arab Spring state.

Al Arabiya reports that the Egypt’s National Council for Women (NCW) does not want the parliament to lower the minimum age of marriage to 14 and allow a husband to have sex with his wife within six hours of her death.

[Insert tasteless joke about tight sphinxter here.]

Gareth Williams inquest turns into a homophobic character assassination

GARETH Williams, the MI6 spook found locked in a bag, could have taken drugs. Or not. He might have been poisoned. Or not.

No peace for John Kercher, Amanda Knox and Meredith Kercher – murder brought to book

JOHN Kercher is talking to the Times‘ Lucy Bannerman. John Kercher is Meredith Kercher’s father. She’s the young British woman murdered in Perugia, Italy. Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito did not murder her. Bannerman writes:

I had never cried during an interview, until I met John Kercher.

Bannerman says Knox and Sollecito walked into “an explosion of flashbulbs and big-money book deals”.

She also walked out of prison. Bannerman is painting a picture.

She adds:

As they did, they took with them the one thing Mr Kercher and his family had left — an explanation, albeit horrifyingly incomplete, of what happened to their beloved “Mez”.
