FOOTBALL HOOLIGANISM : 1978

IN 1977, Millwall FAC’s fans were the subject of a BBC Panorama documentary. Terrace hard nuts luke The Halfway Line, the Treatment and the F-Troop, were glamorised. You want to make the club from the Second Division club form south-east London famous, then stick the fans on the magic box and get a public school anthropologist to take the viewers on a journey int their heart of darkness. Nowadays you might laugh at the class-laden voiceover. You might well chortle when around the 6minute 23second mark the Millwall fan looks forward to the visit of North London club Tottenham Hotspur. He says he won’t “take it from no Northerner”.

Britain’s Got Talent 2013 Episode 1: Gay Simon, Dec’s bed hair, Alice Fredenham and Jack Carroll

Britain's Got Talent 2013 Launch - London

IT’S BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT 2013, and in spite of the cynicism and manipulation we will be watching. And in show one we will be looking out for:

Is Simon Cowell gay?

BGT judge Amanda Holden tells the Sun:

“I don’t think he’s gay and I’ve got a really good radar. I’ve known people were gay before they knew they were gay… Simon’s a spirogyra. He’s a single-celled sex atom. He might have a little dabble. I think he needs the company of women. He needs to have sex but he doesn’t need to get married, he doesn’t need company in that way. He just needs to have a dip in and out as it were. Dip in and out, keep the cab running and go home.

Drilling for water in Holland: an unintentional comedy film

water holland

DRILLING for water in Holland. It is good that anyone should film it. But it’s still funny. Canned laughted would ruin it. So too would music. It’s the clank of the pole as it hits one of the diviners in the spout that tickles the funny bone:

It’s Kevin: The Guardian’s reviewer (whose married to the TV show’s writer) says it’s brilliant!

It's Kevin

THE Guardian’s TV reviewer Julia Raeside is taking a look at BBC2 TV show It’s Kevin, that’s “burst” one our screens. Does she like it?

Eldon’s show in particular looks like nothing else on British screens in over two decades: sketches are one-offs, not developed over the weeks. He does his links on a lonely sofa in front of a white cyclorama, dodging shop dummies that fall from the ceiling and wondering through different doors to join in sketches with incredible guest performers such as Julia Davis and Bill Bailey. It seems most of comedy royalty has lined up to take part, and you can see why.

The Iron Throne Lifesize Replica: yours for $30,000

game of thrones iron throne

ITEM of the day: the Game of Thrones ‘The Iron Throne Lifesize Replica’:

Heavy is the head that wears the crown. And royal is the rear that sits the Iron Throne. The notoriously intimidating seat from the immensely popular HBO fantasy series can now be yours to own. This exact fiberglass replica was handmade, hand painted, and based on a 3D scan of the actual set piece from the TV show. Every detail has been faithfully reproduced, but luckily this model is a little less sharp and stabby than the actual seat. But remember, when you play the game of thrones, you win or…well, you’ll find out.

BBC disapproves of Boris Johnson’s sex life but not Bill Wyman’s

Boris Johnson

A FUNNY thing happened at the BBC.  When Boris Johnson was interviewed by Eddie Mair on the Andrew Marr show, the subject of the London mayor’s love life came up. Mair wondered if Johnson had lied about having an extra-marital affair.

All good stuff.

Only problem is that if adultery is an issue, will BBC question masters, such as Andrew Marr, have their private lives scrutinised? It could help us viewers establish what angle they are coming from. It might be a case of ‘why aren’t you having an affair’?

And then what about other guests, such as, say, Bill Wyman, who appeared on the trusty Beeb’s sofa. Bill chatted about his new photography exhibition – including talking through his nature photos, his time with the Rolling Stones, and concert photography.” He did not alk about Mandy Smith.

Chopper Skyforce 10 news crew catch dogs in the act (LIVE!)

WE go LIVE! with NBC’s Philadelphia News’ “Chopper SkyForce 10″. High over Germantown, Pa., the news sleuths zoom in on a home being used, allegedly, for running a dogfighting ring. A rumour is good enough for the voyeurs of Chopper Skyforce 10 crew, who think nothing of peeking down on wrongdoers from high above. Doggers beware!

YouTube link.

And viewers got a taste of just how good that camera was when it focused on two of the dogs. As WCAU reporter Christine Maddela attempted to report on her findings, the SkyForce 10 camera caught a dog getting intimate with his pal.

“You can see that one dog is, um, chained up, ” Maddela said before the camera quickly zoomed out and the copter moved to film the front yard instead.

Destination Freedom: Richard Durham’s radio show educated with stories of ‘negro’ life

destination freedom

DESTINATION Freedom  was a politically driven half-hour radio drama that gave a voice to African Americans. The blacks were portrayed on TV and radio as one dimensional dullards, slackers, idiots, criminals and simpletons with no history. This radio series would show America’s tens of millions of black people the blacks they recognised. Storytelling would do more than any number of lectures to show the real face of America’s underclass.

Destination Freedom began in 1948, and ran for two years. African American dramatist Richard Durham wrote all 91 episodes. His characters were rounded. They were “rebellious, biting, scornful, angry, and cocky, as the occasion calls for”.
