Midsomer Murders: Brian True-May Bemoans Lack Of Indians

MIDSOMER Murders producer Brian True-May is on gardening leave for comments that his show deliberately ignores ethnic minorities (and other realities). As he said, “it wouldn’t be the English village with them.

As Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby bumbles on, we are indebted to the Anorak reader who points us towards True-May’s words to the Guardian back in June 2010.  Get this:

Asked if he was also talking to the BBC, True-May said: “No, I don’t want to alienate the BBC but I’ve given up working for them a long time ago. There’s too many chiefs and not enough Indians.”

Midsomer Murders: Where White Actors Go To Die

MIDSOMER Murders has no black or Asian characters. Brian True-May (not black) has been removed from his post as the show’s producer for saying he keeps ethnic minority characters out of the show’s storylines.

He said he did not use black and Asian people in the series because “it wouldn’t be the English village with them”.

Down The Line Is Back: Gary Bellamy’s People Pulse

DOWN The Line, the best radio comedy in years, is back. Penned and performed by The Fast Show’s Paul Whitehouse and Charlie Higson, backed by an array of comedy talent (in the true sense of the word), the show is, as you would expect, very funny indeed.

It’s a spoof radio phone-in so convincing that it had Radio 4 listeners up in arms, believing it to be real. But it is also a sharp satire on broadcasting etiquette, and a vivid portrait of the state of the nation in 2011.

The Laurence Olivier Awards 2011: Photos Of TV Stars Who Do Theatre

THE Laurence Olivier Awards 2011 reward actors who can drill a tooth with Nazi menace, pine for Cathy or sing a Jewish psalm. It’s a night of theatre awards.

It’s also a chance to see Amanda Holden, the star of Shrek: The Musical. If that doesn’t sound like the kind of live theatre that explains we love the telly, know that it also stars Richard Blackwood (Donkey),  Nigel Lindsay (Shrek) and EastEnders’ leading brown jumper wearer Nigel Harman (Lord Farquaad).

Matt Baker’s Sarcasm Tucks Up David Cameron

MATT Baker made the news this week for asking David Cameron at the end of this appearance on the One Show’s soft sofas: “Just one thing – how on Earth do you sleep at night?” Here’s the kind of sarcasm early evening telly has been missing ever since The Weakest Link was moved to an earlier slot and Bullet Baxter left Grange Hill. Cameron replied by blathering on about sleeping patterns, a spliff in bed and stirrups.

Rupert Murdoch, Sky News And The Avaaz Myth: What’s Your Agenda?

RUPERT Murdoch says that if his News Corporation gains control of BSkyB, he would hive off the Sky News channel into a new independent company in which it would retain a 39% stake. And his firm will fund the channel for 10 years. Great. We get lots of telly – and the option to pay for it if we want to or not. The BBC gets a genuine rival – although we do have to pay for the BBC. And Channel 5 (owned by Richard Desmond, who also owns the Muslim toilet bashing Daily Star) gets the chance to be the right-wing news channel the left wing media loves to moan about.
